Canon 40D Dog Whistle?

Hi...

6 Months ago I cracked open my 40D box and took the first picture of my dog.

Since that time, she will literally RUN to the basement whenever I get my camera bag out.

Is there some hypersonic noise emitted by the 40d (dust cleaner? Focus button) that is causing my dog some grief? Anyone else experience this?

I'm not 100% sure this experiment worked, but I got the camera out without her seeing it once, and pressed the shutter release button down half-way. Her head popped up from across the room to look at me almost instantly.

R.

Welcome! Quick, go out and buy one each of all the DSLRs that Canon now make and test them side by side. Maybe some Nikon bodies and more P&S cameras as well. Let us know the results.

Sooner or later, EVERYONE will start running when you pull out the camera... at least in my experience :)

Honestly, I have no idea, my dog doesn't seem bothered by it

EDIT: Welcome to the forum!

Some dogs are camera shy! One of my dogs poses when I take out the camera, the other one just looks away.

My dog is scared to death of anything that resembles a gun. At first he was scared of my camera, ran away as soon as he saw it, just like he does with guns(real, toy, paintball, ect). Just took some time, he realizes it is not going to do anything but make a click noise and is no longer scared of it.

perhaps its the ultra-sonic sensor-cleaning mechanism...turn it off in custom functions and see what she does...that's weird indeed.

There is nothing in your camera that would physically cause your dog grief, sounds like something psycological which wouldn't be uncommon. With some training you should be able to correct the behaviour if it's a problem for you.

My dog is also camera shy, and eventually I realised, her shyness increased in direct proportion to the size of the lens - she's fine with the 85mm 1.8 and runs a mile if i haul out the 70-200 and speedlite....I think they find the whole idea of having something pointed close at them, intimidating.

I did wonder if the USM of some lenses produced an unpleasant sound only dogs and children can hear, now i realise it's just me...;)

As in the example above there can be so many different psycological triggers for your dogs behaviour, proximity of the camera, size of the lens etc, if a problem it can be corrected.

Check out a good show on the Bio channel called Dog Whisperer :). Also welcome to the forums.

Wow, I wonder what Canon thinks about 85% of the posts on these boards. Wonder if they laugh hysterically or just shake their heads in disbelief haha. I am still waiting for an "I got abducted by aliens while shooting with my 40D" thread.
