Any tips on training would be welcome :D

Well, I am no expert there. All I am doing is getting him used to the camera. I just carry it around the house (usually turned off, sometimes on). I will point it at him sometimes, othertimes I point it at anything but him. It is a slow process, but it seems to be working.

My dog does the same thing. She hears the AF kick in and she starts running. Never happened with P&S but SLR's she hates them.

I guess Hypersonic is a sound dogs hate.

Was at my parents last week. When I opened the bag and took out my 40D the dog was all interested in a "hey, is there any food in there?" kind of way. Then I pointed the camera at her and she ran for her life. I hadn't pressed any buttons so it wasn't noise from the AF or IS that scared her. I assumed it was because she could see my eye through the lens and thought it was some kind of monster.

Yup, same exact thing happens with my dog.
I press the shutter half way, and he pops up, looks at me, and runs away

Maybe that noise when a flash is charging up? Flash too bright? Maybe the lens can look like a big eye?

could be but I dont think dogs have the kind of eye sight that they can tell the diff between your eye looking in a lens really big or not. My dog was cool with the camera until AF starts up with USM lens. She never had a problem with the kit lens, 75-300, and 50mm f/1.8 MKII. Once I slapped a 28-135 USM on xti she bit me and ran. Now I can be a few rooms away and power up the rig hit the af on button. I hear get from sleeping and take off to hide.

But my mom with here xti and sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro (dc motor) the dog is fine and happy to be the center of attention.

Its the USM motors! Must be.

Hmmm. I have one lens with USM but don't use it much. Time to experiment with the cats.

I googled this issue and found this forum. I googled it, because my dog starts barking and whining any time I use my Canon around him. Tonight, I was down the hall and in another room (I was in a back bedroom and my dog was lying in the kitchen). I was taking photos of my baby and my dog started whining and barking just like he does any other time I use the camera around him! I went out and checked, and he was still lying down in the kitchen, but looking unhappy. This really does exist, I swear. I'm using L series lenses, in case that makes a difference.

Interesting. Do you have any non-USM lenses you could try?

I was thinking of buying about 50 1D MKIIIs, and building an invisible fence with them. Think it would work? :)

Just when I think this place can't get any stranger, I run across a thread like this...

My dog doesn't seem to react to anything, including commands from me or my wife. He's the original couch potato...

Gotta love this thread. My friends cats don't seem to mind the flash or any USM noises.

Hi...

6 Months ago I cracked open my 40D box and took the first picture of my dog.

Since that time, she will literally RUN to the basement whenever I get my camera bag out.

Is there some hypersonic noise emitted by the 40d (dust cleaner? Focus button) that is causing my dog some grief? Anyone else experience this?

I'm not 100% sure this experiment worked, but I got the camera out without her seeing it once, and pressed the shutter release button down half-way. Her head popped up from across the room to look at me almost instantly.

R.

You arent crazy and I dont believe its just "bad doggie" or "shy doggie" syndrome.
I have also noticed that with dogs and cats...as well as my FISH!!! Get this: I play around taking pictures of my Dad's Koi in the pond.... when I press shutter half way... ZAP...they are GONE....... even with goodies on the surface they were eating!! Birds do the same thing. I am suprised that many others havent noticed!

I use a digital rebel xt......... so much for it being the dust cleaner. But I know this.... SOMETHING HAPPENS that evrything else picks up on except us human folk! lol

WELCOME... I am new also...... kind of suffering from INFORMATION OVERLOAD on here. GREAT STUFF!!!

I decided tonight, that for so long I have called myself "self-taught", because nearly everything I learned was by trial and error..... no books, no mentor, etc. But now???
There is so much AWESOME INFORMATION on here and tutorials.......... WOW! (hence the "information overload" syndrome!

Again, WELCOME! Ga in Georgia
