Hey everyone.
Hopefully I'm putting this in the correct section.
I guess to start I'll introduce myself.
I'm Richard. I own a small automotive Restoration business.
I also do some sideline step by step article writing for magazines.
Basically decided to upgrade from my 5 Mega pixel Kodak Point and shoot.

Of course me being a guy and obsessed with electronics. I've always sort of kept an eye on camera technology.

Anyways I decided to go take a look at a better point and shoot to take some decent pictures.

And while going through store after store got sucked into the DSLR's.
I started to consider the Nikon D40. When after going through about four stores comparing prices I saw the Canon EOS Rebel XTI (400D) at a very appealing price.

So I asked them about it, and they said they had just sold out.
So out of curiosity I asked them how much for the in shelf and they offered it to me for 575. I told him I'd give him $539 for it.
After talking to the manager he agreed.
So he goes to ring it up. And I find out that the sale for the day included with the camera a Epson Photo printer with a $100 rebate (Free printer) a SLR's for dummies book, and a 99 dollar camera class. All free with the camera.
The manager didn't seem too happy once he told him that. (It being included must have slipped his mind.)

And I was going to buy a photo printer anyways.
So I see that I basically walked out with the camera for $420.00
Thing looks like it has never been touched because it was always locked behind a glass case.

Anyways, as far as what I needed, I think I may went a little overboard. But all the more fun right?

This would be my First DSLR. So I'm a newb in the SLR crowd. Just trying to learn what I can so I can get the most out of my new toy. :)

I know a guy using a XT (EOS-350D)
And he takes excellent photo's with it.

That was one of my reasons for choosing the Rebel.

So I hope I made a good choice on the camera. and that you guys approve. ;)

I think my first upgrade needs to be rid of the Factory 18-55mm lens.

You guys got any tips, or pointers for a newb?
Also what kind of advice can you give on maintenance of this thing?

Thanks guys.
Richard

Welcome to the forum and what difference does it make whether we approve or not? Are you happy? Then all is good. :):) First rule in this forum is that all the other members of this forum are willing to spend your money with reckless abandon but I would never do that, it's all the other members. ;)

Anyway one of the best ways to get started is to check out the stickies at the top of this forum:

This stickie is a real good start:

As is this one as it has links to just about anything you would ever want to know.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
