G6 won't connect to my computers

I just bought a PowerShot G6. I have a number of computers, using Windows 2000 SP4, Fedora Core 3, and Ubuntu (a distro of Debian) Linux. I installed the software on the Win2k box, and it worked fine. I was also able to get it working on the Fedora Core 3 box, although that obviously used 3rd party software.

Recently, however, upon plugging in the USB cable into the camera and the computer, the camera has gone into Playback mode (it always did until some software started communicating to it).

The software would make it change to PC mode, presumably talking with the PC. It's just not doing that any more.

I called tech support, and they told me to update the VIA drivers on my Win2k box, which I did, but it didn't seem to help (assuming I did that correctly, the VIA driver install is very unsatisfying).

My best guess is that there is something wrong with either the cable or the camera, and I don't see anything wrong with either one. I would much prefer this method worked than something be broken.

I realize that I can buy a card reader and that will circumvent this problem, but I would like this method to work anyway.

I'm hoping somebody here might have some knowledge of this problem. Has it happened to anybody else? Does anybody know the solution? Is the camera itself at fault?

I'm pretty good with computers and whatnot, but this has me stumped.

Thanks.

Before you jump to any wild conclusions, why not try it out on a friends computer first.

A wise suggestion, I'll certainly try to do that.

Like I said, I have a number of computers which I tried, but perhaps I know somebody with XP...

Can't use BreezeBrowser with a Mac. Reason enough to stay with a PC.

well, I'm using linux mainly, and I certainly won't change that for a camera.

I brought it to staples today and snuck the USB plug into some of their XP machines, and it wouldn't recognize the camera and it's supposed to. I thought it might be the cable, so I got a different one and tried it. I got the same result.

I seriously believe that the problem is with the camera, so I'm going to get it replaced. Perhaps my experience can serve someone in the future

It can only help someone if you let us know how you get on... please do.

If it's just a defective camera, well... it's just a defective camera and shouldn't provide any larger lesson to be learned. But if it's something else, we would like to hear about it.

Thanks... and good luck.

My answer maynot directly related to question, but hope will help some people.
I transfer images from CF card to my notebook via a PCMCIA adapter for CF cards.
I brought this adapter from sterlingtek for $5, since then I never used that damn slow USB cord to connect camera to laptop.

This adapter fits nicely into my laptop, and I left it there permanently. It enables, my
laptop to see the attached CF card like a harddrive.
