I had the 50f/18 lens and it was great... I can get one for $70-80. Should I get it or get the 50f/1.4 one for $300??? Is it worth it?? I would be shooting weddings mostly!!!

Gotta be one of the most asked questions here - did you search for other threads? I vote for 1.4

Well, if you thought the 1.8 was great then get another one. I had one for a day and returned it because I wasn't happy with the bokeh. The 1.8 is a sharp lens, it's just cheap and noisy. I would much rather have the Sigma 1.4, but not sure if the price is justified over the Canon 1.4.

I'm still a lens or two away from getting another 50mm, so I've been trying to pay attention... In a 50mm prime, bokeh is probably the biggest selling point for me which is why I'll probably end up going with a Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 and do the EF conversion myself, since those can be had for around $350-ish and the images I've seen just blow you away, but it's manual focus only.

Depends on what you want to shoot with it, and how.

The three I tested did not focus well nearby in low light conditions, and personally I don't think it is very good until F/2.8. I think the 50 F/1.8 beats it up to F/2.8.

I'd rather get a 28 F/1.8 or 85 F/1.8, in combination with a 50 F/1.8, either Mk II, or Mk I.

Another option may be to get a Sigma 50 F/1.4. Over it sells for slightly more now than a Canon 50 F/1.5, but you have to make sure you get one that focuses well. It looks like some copies don't do too well in this department. I'll have another go at one tomorrow.

Kind regards, Wim

I typically MF with my nifty so...

It's an awesome lens and I can't really see myself upgrading.

I only upgraded from the 1.8 to the 1.4 because the F/1.8 was so loud and cheap feeling.

Plus if something happens to my 1.4, then I can just drive a few miles and pick up a 1.8 for cheap, if I don't have enough to replace the 1.4 at the moment.

well if you read enough threads on this topic, the general consensus is that the 1.8 doesnt focus well in low light (my personal experience concurs with that!) and the 1.4 has better focusing capability all around... so if one were shooting weddings for money, i would think one would want a lens that focuses quicker, quieter and more consistently

I have a 1.8 and i never use it (or even list it in my gear sig) cause if i were to need < F/4 its for low light, but it sucks at focusing in low light... so therefore its basically a paper weight!

Get the 1.4, but be warned the 50mm upgrade path often leads to the dreaded 50L f1.2 purchase ;) The 50mm f1.8 (plastic fantastic) is a decent lens for the money but it didn't find it blew me away or was consistent.

I vote for the 50 1.4, then again I'm a little biased because I own one
