Does anyone see a problem with using a large flash at football games. By large I'm talking about larger than the normal canon flashes. I use a Norman 400B for rodeos. I was wondering if it would cause and problems at HS football.

I'm just not familiar with these. Some don't even like flash period, so it depends on the school I guess.

Thanks for responding. I've hear some dont like it. I just hope someone could answer that would know why. Or if it is allowed if they think it would be ok to use this type of flash/strobe.

First if the Norman is really strong I would check with the school's AD to see if is a problem with him/her, also it may upset one or either of the coaches. Are you hand holding the flash? If not where are you going to put it that it is not a danger to any of the players, cheerleaders, officials or the Norman itself. I'm just not a fan of using a flash at sporting events, I just don't to interfere with the players. That said, I use a 580exII at bicycle races and riders tell me they don't even notice it, but this is more fill during the day so the flash isn't that noticeable.

Obviously, if you fire off a 747 landing light on the sidelines it's probably gonna be too bright. However, short of this, the brightness of a flash or strobe is normally not an issue since the duration of the light is so short.

So, to answer the original question, if a flash is OK (which it almost always is) then a brighter flash is almost certainly OK.

You sure the Norman is that much brighter than, say, a Canon 580EX?

Here is the info on the Norman:
Guide Number 163 @ ISO 100

And, for comparison, here is the info on a 580EX II:
Guide Number 191 @ ISO 100

Thanks for the reply. The norman mounts on a bracket above the camera. With battery on a belt. http://www.normanlights.com/battery_systems.asp (external link)

From guide numbers 580ex II is more powerful so don't worry and use the norman. Having smaller flash with more power would be easier to handle IMHO.
