New to photography... looking on feedback for these pictures of our twins' first shoes! I'm going to be hanging these in their nursery. Shot in a home-made light box, 450D w/ EF 50mm 1.8 lens. His shoes were shot w/ the built-in flash, and her shoes were not because the shoes reflected it too much.

The problem here is that the perspective seems different in the two shots, which have been spliced together in post processing. The lower pair of shoes were shot form a higher angle above the shoes, whereas the upper pair were shot from much lower. The viewer sees that as a perplexing perspective.

Your exposures and control over the background are good, but if you are working with reflective objects you need a sofbox or other techniques for eliminating glare in the subject.

Thanks for the feedback! They're actually two different images, same size, and going on different walls in the room (I guess I need to put a gap in between them). I'll look into shooting them from the same angle, and the softbox.

I just have a question about the color of the shadows ... the top has a blue shadow and the bottom has a green shadow... intentional or a product of processing?

Hmm... I'm looking at it on my monitors at work and it looks a lot different here than it does at home. So it wasn't intentional, but I'm not sure where it happened (probably post-proc.) I may end up going B&W with them since they don't match the colors in the nursery according to my wife.

Nice idea. I much prefer the angle of the upper image, as it seems to more show they are slippers of a young child. The girls pair would be better taken from this lower angle, too, so as to not have the logo showing inside, even though the logos can be removed easy enough in PP----the logos don't add anything of substance, but are more of a distraction, IMO.

Also, and more important to me, I prefer the DOF in the upper image. The shoes of your daughter need a little more DOF, in my opinion. I'd like to see the toes and the cross straps in focus.

Fantastic idea---the resulting images you'll cherish long after your twins are grown up and wearing big shoes!

Thank you! I am definitely going to re-shoot her pair from the same angle as his, along with trying to reduce the glare and increase the DOF a little. I agree with you about the logos too, I hadn't noticed them and they are distracting and don't add anything to the picture.

EDIT: Just noticed a little white thread on the left shoe strap, going to Photoshop that out if I can...

don't rule out the other shoes, either. this was kind of fun... didn't intend to make a spread of them like this, but could make for an interesting framed photo... or choose one or a few of your favorite colors

Thanks but it's very easy - simply slide the hue slider (Image > Adjustments >Hue/Saturation in Photoshop and select a channel if you want). To be more precise (which I didn't do and you can see the changes in the hue of the shadows below the suede shoes and the interior shadows of the other shoe), you can either mask the portion of the shoes you want to change or select them.

Again, very easy... but kinda fun.
