Custom pc: I3,3.3ghz, corsair 16GB DDR3, many fans, 3TB in Space, Used for photography editing

not sure how many fans you are planning to have but you dont really need much for editing pictures. all you need is a decent cpu air cooler and an exhaust fan in the back or top to blow the heat out of the case. I cant speak about other coolers but at the moment i have the artic freezer 7 which works well even for gaming. lots use the cooler master 212. both of the cooler will have trouble with ram clearance so if you have tall rams then you will have to consider losing the first slot depending on your motherboard or rams. low profile rams will be fine.

My PC is both for photo editing and gaming:
i5 3570k (3.4 GHz)
8GB RAM
128GB & 256GB SSDs and a 2 TB USB 3.0 drive for the photos (I get 30-50MB/sec read rates)
AMD 6950 2GB GPU
30" Dell IPS (which sorely needs to be calibrated now.)

Just got done a little refresh. Added a Kingston Hyper 120gb SSD and 8GB more Ram for a total of 16gb. Haven't even fired her up at my house yet since getting it tested. Going to upgrade Lightroom 3.x to 4.x once I get it situated. I put Win7, CS5 and LR onto the SSD.

Build criteria:

• Current use: PS and LR plus normal PC needs

• Future use: Video, 50% probability
  
• Quiet, reasonable reliability (data backed up regularly)
  
• Long life (est. 4 yrs, then becomes second system)
  
• PS, LR upgrading: not necessarily every new version

I don't get it...good components, fast CPU, Good Ram... but no SSD. An intel Sata3 120GB can be had for $120-ish ......

Its more than boot times...everything you do including your photo editing is enhanced with an SSD.

I missed it at first too. It's buried in there a bit.

Pretty much same setup as last time, got some quieter fans and moved the HDD down to the 3.5 bay position, super quiet now. Also found a nice stable 4.2 GHz overclock and added 8GB more ram since last posting.
