That's really interesting - I'm contemplating one of the EVGA GTX FTW cards, either a 1070 or 1080 and was wondering what sort of issues you had with the FTW flavor? I don't plan on doing any overclocking, just want a fast card with a lot more memory than my current 5 year old GTX 560Ti.

Sorry for the late response - haven't been around. The card would constantly crash and I mean constantly. I literally did not have it for 1 hr. when problems arose and I had to RMA after only having it long enough to install it and try and play a game. I ended up RMA'g 3-980 FTW cards until I was able to step up to the 980Ti. I am now a Ti junkie. I just don't have any warm and fuzzy feelings for any FTW cards after my experience. However, it seems the newer FTW versions are doing well.

Sorry to hear about the constant crashing. I'm hoping that the FTW flavors have gotten better in the newer 1070 and 1080 series cards, although I'm not in a hurry to run out and buy one just yet. I've never spent more than $300 on a video card (just cheap) but after reading about these I'm considering taking the plunge for something really nice. We have a local Microcenter that's always running sales and I'm hoping for some deep discounts either Memorial Day or 4th of July.

I actually bought a EVGA GTX 1080 SC from that exact MicroCenter (one in Mayfield Heights) not that long ago. I think I got it for about $520 with an additional $30 MIR. Huge step up for me from my GTX 970 as I have a 1440P 165 Hz GSync monitor so I need everything that I can get from a GPU. A friend of mine has a EVGA GTX 1070 FTW that he was getting a bunch of artifacts with and recently RMAed with EVGA. He got a replacement card in a few days, and I think the overall experience with EVGA is that they are pretty good with RMAs if you run into issues. For me, though, the SC edition was cheaper than the FTW edition and that price difference didn't outway the performance difference (which I can just overclock the difference or more anyway). Of course, FTW will be slightly better binned than their SC brethren. Haven't ran into any issues yet with the card.

I haven't run anything to test the ASIC quality on, but my PNY reference 980 Ti runs the same overclock as my FTW version, I think the FTW is capable of around 30mhz more, but nothing worth paying extra for in my opinion. The cooler on it is very quiet though and works very well (though obviously not as well as the hybrid cooler I put on the PNY card), temps never go much above 70 degrees celsius from what I've seen and I put those cards through their paces. I never understood how people will pay a pretty large premium for a mild difference in overclocking potential... I only ended up with the FTW card because it was the cheapest 980 Ti I found after the second hybrid I ordered (I originally wanted both cards to be on water and am too lazy to custom rig) came with a broken pump and I didn't feel like waiting to find another good deal on one

I have added to my machine; 1tb SSD for current photographs a Raid card and a pair of 4tb drives to separate out long term projects and Photographs of the children and overspill of the music collection. I also re boxed it into a bigger case so it would have greater airflow and took the chance to upgrade the motherboard as a Gigabyte gaming series was reduced from near £200 to £40 on Amazon. Have to DVD drive in it now though, use an external to import CD's instead.

Sounds pretty nice Alex - what new case did you end up going with?

The case is a cooler master 300 400 something like that, it can hold a lot of fans and is quite plain looking.

I hope there will be some decent sales. I am waiting for the EVGA's Hydro 1080Ti. If they don't come for awhile, I will look into the regular version and install a water block, but I rather just go all in one this go round.

And, you were right, I was out shooting and also cycling.

That is a very empty case.
You should really buy 2x GTX 1080Ti to fill it up. most high end GPUs also come with cool LEDs

May I ask what one does with 24 cores?

Of course people asked me what I did with 4 cores back when the only way to get that was a similar Dual socket Supermicro etc.. mine was the H8DCE with a pair of Dual Core Opterons back when Opterons were miles faster than the silly little P4's and Xenon of the era intel was pushing.
