Honestly, that's what prefetch is for. It intelligently pre-loads things you will probably be launching in to RAM. So I doubt you'd see much of a difference at all. Some people turn it off when they have SSDs, but I think that's a mistake.

If you had to choose yourself, what would you store on the RAM drive that would give you a speed boost?

Spare RAM is used as a disk cache, so by putting a disk into the spare ram you're reducing the ability of the OS to cache files in memory, making it hit a disk more often. I'd only bother if you had 32GB of RAM or better.

I sort of figured that might be the case, but my knowledge of the subject isn't as good as I'd like. Thanks for the quick response Tim ;).

New rig, finally 2 weeks ago and final tweaks I am into Ivybridge.

CPU: Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4ghz
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth Z77
RAM: 16gb DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance
SSD: Crucial M4 128gb
HDD1: WD Raptor 150gb
HDD2: Seagate 7200.11 1tb
PSU: Antec TPQ1000
HSF: Corsair H50
Case: Fractal Arc Midi with FANNNSSS
I/O: Logitech G15/500/35
LCD: Dell U2711

Its a great machine that handles pretty much everything I can throw at it. I will say when using light room and doing the final renders it maxes the CPU on all cores compared to my old i7. I have to say though the SataIII compared with my M4 SSD is achieving noticeable faster speeds than my older SataII Asus motherboard. Over all I am really happy with the build. Now just to sell my old parts haha.

Computer Hardware / Software

Core i5-2500K overclocked to 4.8Ghz on air via a Noctua NH-D14 Cooler
Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard with 16GB of G.Skill Ripjaws X 12800 CAS8
OCZ 120GB Vertex 3 MAX IOPS + OCZ 80GB Vertex 2 for OS+Apps+Games / Scratch drives
WD Caviar Black 1.5TB for images, 2TB WD Green for media
2x Gigabyte Radeon HD 6870 Windforce cards factory overlocked for gaming
All mounted in a Silverstone FT02 Fortress Black (can highly recommend as a case), powered by a Seasonic M12D-850W PSU
Displayed on a HP ZR30W with 2x HP ZR22W displays in portait orientation on the sides.

Storage/Backups
LR Database is on the Vertex 3 MaxIOPS SSD (550MB/s)
LR Cache, LR PReviews, System Swap File on the 80GB Vertex 2 SSD (250MB/s)
Raw files are on the 1.5TB WD Caviar Black HDD (Av 115MB/s)

Everything system wide is backed up to two twin sets of 2TB WD Green SATA drives mounted in internal hotswap caddies. These two sets are swapped weekly with one being onsite and the other offsite stored at my workplace. A historic backup from Feb 2010 is stored in the UK at my parents.

It goes like stink and I won't be building / acquiring another personal system without SSD's.

Hey Stu...I have this http://h10025.www1.hp.com …track_link=ot_search#N255 (external link)
and am ugrading to 24 GB of RAM based on the fact that when I activated "task manager" it showed that my 9 GB of RAM was being max-ed out while CPU was hardly blipping. Have you checked the "need"?

I just replaced a 7 year old HP8400 workstation with:

HPZ820 Workstation
Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2670, 2.6 GHz, 20 MB cache, Eight-core
Intel® C602 Chipset
16 GB 8-channel ECC DDR3 1600 MHz
AMD FirePro™ V5900
2 x Intel Cherryville 180 GB SSD Drives - C for OS and apps, D for PS Scratch and C1 Destination Folder
2 x 3TB Hitachi Ultrastar (Raid 1) Storage Drive
1125W 90% Efficient wide-ranging, active Power Factor Correction
2 x NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27"

Needless to say, this thing screams. I process thousands of 50D and 5DMKii Raw files in Capture One Pro at a time. Conversion speed on the 50D files dropped from 8 sec to under a sec, and 5DMKii Raw files to 16bit tiffs dropped from 18sec per file to under 2 sec per file. I feel reborn.

Hey there Chauncey - good seeing you :D.

Ineresting setup you have there. Did it really come with the Quebec keyboard? I can't say that I know much about the HP boxes but you have a decent CPU on that. PS will take all the RAM you can throw at so if you do some really labor intensive stuff it will make use of it.

My motherboard - an Assus p8 - will take a max of 32GB of RAM but that would have been an extra $200 over the 16GB that I thought was adequate. The key thing on a lot of these HP and Dell boxes is that they have sufficient airflow for cooling. My old Dell box had wires and everything all jammed together with no real cable managemnt/proper airflow to speak off. That thing would heat part of my home office.

Just make sure you have it in a ventilated area, and not all boxed in where it might start baking bread for you :D. Have fun buddy! - Stu

8 cores and 16 threads

I would love to see what one of those chips could do folding. I beleive they are locked for overclocking but 16 threads is still 16 threads.

I honestly wouldn't know how, nor do I see any reason to over clock this CPU. I'm not terribly savvy when it comes to tinkering with my computers. I have a local HP reseller who has built my last 3 workstations, with my input as well as his. I'm amazed at what this one is capable of.
