I honestly wouldn't know how, nor do I see any reason to over clock this CPU. I'm not terribly savvy when it comes to tinkering with my computers. I have a local HP reseller who has built my last 3 workstations, with my input as well as his. I'm amazed at what this one is capable of.

For photo editing there is really no reason for an OC, I did a few simple tests and while their are gains they wouldn't be noticeable even in batch operations. With 16 threads churning away at editing Im sure that thing flys.

Hey Stu...I have this http://h10025.www1.hp.com …track_link=ot_search#N255 (external link)
and am ugrading to 24 GB of RAM based on the fact that when I activated "task manager" it showed that my 9 GB of RAM was being max-ed out while CPU was hardly blipping. Have you checked the "need"?

What were you doing at the time?

You can't judge by amount of RAM in use. OSes will always use all RAM for various reasons.

The safest "you need more RAM" you can get is to look for is number of blocks pushed to paging space on disk while you experience slowness.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

RAM is currently dirt cheap. Why wait for the machine to come to a crawl before adding capacity?

There was a question there how to find out whether it is needed.

Most PCs in use here also have low maximum RAM so the question becomes whether to replace the system, and if so whether to go with a solution that does registered RAM or has multiple memory banks.

New rig, finally 2 weeks ago and final tweaks I am into Ivybridge.

CPU: Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4ghz
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth Z77
RAM: 16gb DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance
SSD: Crucial M4 128gb
HDD1: WD Raptor 150gb
HDD2: Seagate 7200.11 1tb
PSU: Antec TPQ1000
HSF: Corsair H50
Case: Fractal Arc Midi with FANNNSSS
I/O: Logitech G15/500/35
LCD: Dell U2711

Its a great machine that handles pretty much everything I can throw at it. I will say when using light room and doing the final renders it maxes the CPU on all cores compared to my old i7. I have to say though the SataIII compared with my M4 SSD is achieving noticeable faster speeds than my older SataII Asus motherboard. Over all I am really happy with the build. Now just to sell my old parts haha.

Thats pretty close to my build:
CPU: Intel i5 3570K
Mobo: Asus p8Z77v-lk
RAM: 8gb DDR3 1600 G.skill ripsaw 17,000
SSD: Crucial M4 128gb
HDD1: Seagate 7200 2tb
HDD2: Seagate 7200 2tb (Raid 1)
PSU: Nvidea xt550ti 1gh
Case: Fractal Arc Midi with 3 fractal 140mm fans and 4 aerocool shark 140mm fans
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster hyper 212 w/ 2 120mm fans
LCD: Asus 21.5 IPS lcd with LED back lit monitor

Since you have yours clocked to 4.4 I have a question... I can't seem to get past a CPU ratio of 34... any ideas why? I have the latest BIOS I just can't seem to get anything more then that. Any ideas?

I just sent one of my Seagates in to get replaced as it's died on me and I contacted Fractal as the fan controller for the case fans died. I just wish the arc midi had more 5.25 drive slots.

You aren't going to "fry" it. Worst case the machine won't POST and you swap back.

I'd argue that 16GB is rarely necessary, though, and won't make your machine faster unless you are RAM starved with 8GB.

I'm going to have to agree with the last part, nothing I do seems to require more then 8gigs of RAM. Even Oblivion and Starcraft with maxed graphics.

What are you settings for your overclock attempts? You should be able to get a bit of overclock without even adjusting voltages.

If you hit F12 while in your bios and have a USB drive in you should be able to post screen shots of your bios screens, its often easier than typing out all the settings.

I disabled turbo so that is my 24/7 OC. With the new Ivybridge chips you have the ability to OC only the turbo multiplier. I also use the rule of thumb that if it is unstable give it more voltage. I hit a ceiling with temps because my H50 started falling a little short. If you want to run that speed all the time just make sure that you have turbo off. That will allow just a straight OC on the chip itself not the turbo.

The problem with mine is that even with turbo disabled It won't allow me to adjust my cpu ratio PAST 34.

Are you sure you have a K chip? The non k chips have a locked multi.

Also what board do you have? Some boards do not allow multi over clocking.

Currently I have the Asus P8z77v-LK, I contacted Asus to ask about it before and they told me they don't talk to people about overclocking.

this is the exact chip I have:

Post the BIOS screenshots, you should be able to overclock with that combo via multiplier.
