I have the GT3530, not sure about the LS, and it is a great tripod. Like you all I had ever owned was a $100 or cheaper tripod and the difference is remarkable. The Gitzo even with the center column extended is rock solid. The only problem I have with it is the height and that is not a major problem. I use a 488RC2 ball head and the camera height is still a little low, I have to bend over to see through the viewfinder, but it is really not much of a problem. If I don't want to bend over I extend the center column and even with the 100-400 on my 40D the tripod is still solid. I think you will be happy with your purchase.

I'm not sure about the model number. B&H may be listing it wrong. Their part # is 3530LS. It appears to be a Gitzo 3 series, Systematic. If so, then you are buying one of the best available. It should out last you.

I did some measuring and hope it will help you. My tripod is a GT3530 and I think it may be essentially the same as the one you are considering. With the legs fully extended, using a 488RC2 BH, and a 40D on a flat surface the height to the center of the view finder is approximately 60.25". With the center column fully extended the height to the center of the VF is approximately 72.75". I am 5' 10" tall and the height to my eye is about 65.5" so if I don't extend the column some I have to bend over a little. I don't hesitate to raise the center column and I don't notice any instability in the tripod from raising the camera a few inches.

The center column is about 1.25" in diameter and is keyed so that it will not rotate, it only slides up and down, and on a flat surface with the column fully extended you can try to wiggle the center column and it doesn't seem to move at all. I highly recommend this tripod and think you would be happy with it.

You will enjoy it! It is a giant step up from those el cheapo tripods we used to use.

Nice move. Now you need an equally good ballhead for it. I'd recommend a Markins M20, assuming you are not mounting the really big boys on it.

I have a RRS BH-55 LR ballhead on it.
