Stock cars, sprint cars and midgets, off and on the track on a bright and sunny early autumn day at the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway -- sort of the Midwestern version of Goodwood, and one of two such gatherings on successive days around 150 miles apart:

The Torino was a 1965 Ford Fairlane built by Holman and Moody, rebuilt as an aero Torino and driven by Benny Parsons in ARCA, then driven by Wendell Scott in NASCAR. That car, which comes from the era when NASCAR stock cars were still rebuilt from vehicles off the production line, last raced in 1970. That Torino had a short history, compared with some of the other vehicles with a remarkable history at the event. There were around 60 old cars on display, along with a couple of replicas that included 1960's roadster replicas made by A.J. Watson. The yellow car is one of the rare roadster midgets built by the legendary Frank Kurtis. There was another Kurtis midget on display that got the attention of a modern-day car builder who has constructed winning midgets for Tony Stewart; that car builder was amazed by the workmanship in that Kurtis car. I should have asked the gentleman with the flowing beard whether he was older than the car he was driving. :)
