i know there are other threads about mentioning briefly disk sync utils but i thought id try and bring all the recommendations/information into one thread.
specifically from my point of view im after a windows util to sync 2 external drives so i looked at:
Microsoft SyncToy 2.0 - http://www.microsoft.com …D0592D8C52&displaylang=en![]()
Allway Sync - http://www.allwaysync.com![]()
both free windows apps..
Tests were done by creating 2 folders on the desktop and setting the apps to sync between the 2 then creating new files/folders, moving, copying and deleting files.
Allway Sync - A very good app, has automatic syncing on various events like file change, delete, logoff, connection of device, idle, application start or shedule. Sync'ing can be done in either or both directions. Easy to set up and sits in the system tray watching the folders.
One downside, i found that if you move a file to the sync folder it did not get picked up by the auto sync, you had to manually sync the folders to detect the file. However modifying the file and deleting the file both kicked off an auto sync. AMMENDMENT - Its probably worth noting that the default set up for syncing is for FILE only and not folders also. Changing this option appeared to fix the issue with moving files to the sync folder mentioned above.
Another very useful feature is when the it detects that a file has been deleted when it syncs up you can set in the options to move the file(s) to a directory instead of removing. Useful if you want the option to pull back deleted files later down the road.
MS SyncToy - Again a very easy to set up and use application. However is limited in features, for example there is no realtime syncing. You can however schedule syncing within Windows Task Sheduler. Otherwise syncs have to be kicked off manually.
At present I am leaning towards Allway purely for its auto sync feature, when my external drives arrive this week i'll put it to the test.
Please feel free to add other apps (Windows and OSX) to this thread with your thoughts and comments etc.
Cheers guys
