I've been asked to do our youth hockey team and individual photos this year and I need some help with lighting and lens selection. This sounds like a good excuse/opportunity to buy more stuff ;) Any suggestions as to which lens would be best (1DMKIII) and lighting? I'm willing to spend the money to get the right stuff.

Thanks!

Any lens will work as long as it frames the subject the way you like. You can use a 24mm all the way to 600mm for portraits, and since they are rarley shot wide open the lens makes the smallest difference.

Spend some time in the lighting section as that will be the factor in quality portraits...

Thanks Matt. I have a 70-200 but I thought that might be a little long. Besides - I need an excuse to by another L ;)

Is T&I a good excuse to by strobes (Calumet has a good inexpensive kit)? I only have a 430EX.

I actually use the 70-200 a lot for my ind portraits. Mainly because it balances well for me with my camera.

For individual you could swing by with the 430 and a reflector. I prefer 2 lights for team shots. Check out Alien Bees, great quality and price.
