The home gym I usually shoot at only has bleachers on one side of the floor and has an upper bleacher section with a railing separating them.

My question is will clamping one AB800 on each end of the gym aimed straight out with a 7" or 11" reflector be enough to capture players running in each direction in a basketball game.

My first thought would be that the non-lit side will obviously be darker....the bounce quality of the ceiling is poor to say the least with the girders and ductwork...not to mention the sodium vapor lights. I'll just have to try it out. Any thoughts?

um...GOODLUCK! :-D
I'd say mainly find a spot where they would be out of harms way. don't want many people gathering around them and creating shadows. I've seen someone post up a strobe from the ground but facing the wall away from the game bouncing off of that to get some fill. but yeah, tough to say. maybe ask the person in charge of the gym what they think?

Without a picture of the gym, I'm not sure how anyone can help you with where to clamp the strobes. I did some work in a gym last year and was able to clamp strobes on pipes that were coming out of the wall up high. I had one on each of two corners and angled them up and at the ceiling around the key. This let me shoot from one end of the gym, but I haven't done it enough to really be used to it. I like the freedom of shooting without bounds, and just having two strobes limits what direction you can shoot in.

Yeah, I thought of that when I originally posted, but don't have one.

without four strobes, I'd say focus n shooting one end only. It would be pretty futile to try to light the whole thing with two and instead of some good image potential, I think you'd just be fighting a lost cause.

I've clamped to bleachers, conduit, the swingy things on the door hinges for the exits (which were locked at that end so be sure if you do this to check). Point is, be creative cause you'll probably have to be to get things working. Also, if you can't bounce, don't be afraid to shoot direct by getting them as high as you can and then fanning them out over the top of the key at about 7' above that point. The cross flash will kill the shadows fairly well and if your settings are good, it shouldn't look too flashed (if at all).

Not to mention get permission from the athletic director before you start clamping strobes in the gym. You may have already have permission, but just wanted to throw that out as a reminder.

Yeah, I already thought of that...thanks....they can be pretty anal about these things. I probably won't even try it in this gym due to the layout.
