Hi all,

I'm a newbie on the forum and have a question on the EF 25 extension tube. (By the way I'm using a 450D and a 17-85mm IS USM lens. Hoping to add the EF-S 70-300mm IS USM in a couple of months time when the old finances allow...LOL). Anyway, I'm going to purchase a second hand EF 25 extension tube in the interum until I can afford a dedicated macro lens(which is even further away financially than the 70-300). Was wondering exactly what the difference is between the EF 25 and the second generation EF 25 II ????

Thanks,

Matt.

IIRC, and I could easily be wrong, the EF-25-II supports EF-S lenses like your 17-85. The earlier EF-25 only supports the EF mount.

Yep, thats right, and you can usually get a Mark I version quite a bit cheaper than the Mark II and if you only use EF lenses there really it no need for the Mark II.

Oh dear.......I've already purchased a secondhand EF-25 (not the EF-25 II). Does that mean it won't fit the 450D and EF-S 17-85mm I have or just that the electronic couplings will not work making focusing etc manual ???

Thanks for all your guys' help by the way.

The "original" tubes will fit the 450D but the EF-S lenses won't fit (physically) on those tubes.

the tube will fit your 450d, the 450d has ef and ef-s mounts.... but your lenses won't go onto the tube :-/

Thanks everyone for your help. Should have done a bit more research than I did,eh !!! Looks like I'll have to flick the the EF-25 and fork out for the mark II model, huh.

I already have a set of three extension tubes (30mm 16mm and 9mm) but don't like the fact that the electronic coupling is null and void so to speak, and also as most of my photography is in the back country and out in the field, the idea of continually changing tube/lens combinations allowing greater oppurtunity for dust/dirt etc to get in didn't appeal either.

Thanks again.
