I need serious opinion, i went out to capture some autumn colors, i got tired of waiting for a sunny day as it doesn't seem we are getting any. it was very cloudy and hence i found it difficult to get the picture the way i want, so ended uo playing with them in PS. Please give me critique and advise on each of these , All shot with a 50mm 1.8. in AV at 4.5. ISO100. rebelXT

thank you

You will have trouble making any money on #'s 1, 4 and 5.
#'s 2 & 3 have more promise as abstracts or as landscapes, because they are both intrinsically beautiful and tasteful.

#2 is very nice and #3 is OK. Both have good composition and exposure and color balance. Interest is a little low on both, but they are good shots.

Well I know Ottawa when I see it, since I live here. There is nothing in your photo's that grab my attention. I don't think one needs a subject per say but something has to grab the viewer, the better photo is probably number 2 because of the rich colour, # 3 and 4 look over processed.

My suggestion to you is to look closely at other people's photographs and particularly those that grab you, and ask yourself what is it about this that grabs my attention.

Good luck and if you see a big bearded guy with a canon 40D talking to himself in the streets, just say hi :-)

2 and 3 are my favorites. However, living in Oregon we don't get to see the beautiful bright fall colors you enjoy..... which makes me also like #4.

i realy like #3 but the tree line has a halo from over processing. if you like that sort of processing then at the end you need to clone out the halo that runs the edge. i might also crop like a pano take a 3rd off the top and an 8th off the bottom will bring your horizon line up out of the center creating more depth

I love the colours in 4, but the shopping trolleys, car park and store ruin it. If you go back there get closer to that red/green tree and try to isolate it from all that other stuff in the image.

Just some hopefully helpful information by the wayside. I downloaded this to my 400d and find it pretty useful

You still should PP the files afterwards but at least they start out reasonably well suited to the autumn colours. For what its worth the studio portrait and snapshot portrait are pretty useful also. I don't use the actual profiles as I shoot in raw and don't use DPP, but it gives a good indication on the cameras LCD of what the end image might look like. Which is probably the best feature of Picture styles as you can get an approximation while you are still there and able to retake the shot.

Thanks guy, this is exactly what i wanted. i think i need to crop a bunch of these a little bit more, and learn how to get ride of the halos.

Bronco, nice to meet you, i went through your flickr, amazing pictures.

i will try to download the piture style thing and see how that goes.

Concerning Picture number 1. i take this highway exit almost everymorning, and everyday i mermerize at the forest on that side, i want a really nice picture that captures the feeling of me on the highway along with that small forest. Anyone have any creative idea on how i should approach this shot? maybe a wide angle lens, take the picture from the side of the highway instead of on top of the overpass?

thanks everyone
