Is there much of a purpose for a monopod with a head?

Do you think there's a point to having a head on a monopod?

The only thing i cant think of is maybe switching to portrait orientation, but i dont know if the monopod would work very well with the camera not straight over the pole.

Anyone find it helpful to use a head on a monopod?

A tilting head, yeah - ala Manfrotto 234 - a regular head I just find annoying as there's far too much movement in every direction. Tilting the whole pod backwards and forwards to try and get an angle isn't particularly effective, especially when you're in a hurry (panning etc.).

Switching to portrait orientation is usually taken care of by the tripod collar - I haven't ever used a monopod with a lens that didn't have one!

I've been told that having a ball head on a monopod is handy if you like to shoot with the monopod angled slightly away from yourself and still be able to shoot level.

The portrait orientation is a good question but the couple of people I know shooting this way are using lenses that have collars and they use the collar to rotate to portrait.

I always use my Manfrotto 680B monopod with a Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head on it. The reason is simple - I use my monopod in MANY ways other than standing vertically behind a vertical monopod. I need the versatility of having the camera at virtually any angle relative to the monopod.

If I want to use the classic vertical monopod position, I merely straighten the ball head and lock it. Then it operates like anybody else's monopod.

Ballheads and tripod colors do the trick every time...
