the problem i'm having, is that there's so many factors to deal with, that i'm at a loss as to where to start.

I have a computer with Photoshop CS3, was shooting with a Canon XTI with Sandisk III 4gig reading off of a first gen HP CF reader (yeah, very VERY slow).

yesterday, i got 2 items in the mail. Canon 40D, and a lexar firewire CF reader.

first off:

  • all pictures can be previewed fine on the camera
  • all pictures (CR2) can be copied off of the disk through the lexar reader fine.
  • I could NOT use the DPP software that came with the XTI to transfer the files. it would transfer, but i would not be able to view the files. The files would be a CR2 icon with an "X" through it.
I then installed the software that came with the 40D, and now am able to xfer the files via the canon browser and DPP.

but, i still can't use adobe bridge to access the files, and convert to DNG files. to clarify, i can use bridge to DL the files, but bridge can't preview the files, can't convert them to DNG, and when i double click, it won't open in CS3 because "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file"

i prefer to do my download through bridge->ps. Anyone got any guess on why CS3 would work fine with the XTi, but crap out with the 40D?

You need to upgrade to the latest version of Camera Raw. It's the 14 bit raw files thats getting you.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Update your Codec's, Go to Adobe site (if on windows) and go to adobe labs and download the DNG Codec ( lets you see DNG files in windows),and Adobe Camera Raw 4.6, Go to Canon site and download Raw Codec 1.3 and install. That should now let you see your RAW/DNG in Adobe Bridge..
