I went to take off my grip on one of my 40ds today, turned the knob, it kept turning and all of a sudden... crack.... then the wheel keeps spinning. the grip was half way off., and luckily i have a very thin hack saw with a fine tooth blade to cut the screw off.

but now i have a nearly new BGE2N grip thats ****ing useless. Will canon warranty this you think? Its very new, i dont have teh receipt but i do have the warranty card.

Anyone have this happen to them?

you're gonna leave the thread in your 40d's tripod socket? That sounds like a bad idea.

already got it out. i cut it flush on teh grip side so i would have enough to get teh screw out of my camera.

Happens quite often. Canon would have taken it off and fixed it for nothing, even out of warranty in most cases. Not sure what they'll do since you cut it off, but suspect they will do so in this case as well.

When you get it fixed, don't crank the new one down nearly as hard. It only needs to be slightly snug after finger tight. The gear is plastic and will eventually stress and break from being over-tightened.

Oh, and in every case, Canon is the best source for warranty information for Canon products. ;)

Wow, yea I ditched all my grips a while ago specifically because I couldn't stand how cheap they felt. This is just adding some confirmation of that for me. Sorry to hear about your troubles and hopefully Canon will do the right thing IMO and give you a new one or at least fix yours.

I just bought this grip recently, but I've been hearing so many cases of the grip breaking so easily that I guess it's just a matter of time before I experience the same. If Canon just can't build it right, then at least they should stand behind their product by fixing it for free.

I didn't crank on mine either, but mine got broke too. I sent it to Canon when I dropped the camera and broke the LCD glass so they did both at the same time. Both were done under warranty. I didn't even fill out or send the warranty card for the grip.

Here is a copy and paste of a post I made a few days ago about why it is made the way it is.

If the gear was made of metal then people would over-tighten it and it would either be nearly impossible to remove or would eventually stress the bolt enough to cause it to fail (break) and one day you'd put the camera on your tripod, or hold it vertically by the grip, and you'd watch as your camera fell crashing to the ground while looking at the grip still in your hand.
