Thanks Mike,

This goes back to the the way I was taught by Scott Smith. Not only did he teach me to use reflective readings for my backgrounds but he instilled in me the idea of doing my own experiments to confirm information. Even when he showed me something he never just asked me to believe him or trust blindly. I was always encouraged to test theories and concepts to make sure they worked and were repeatable.

I always encourage others to do the same.

yeah I totally agree with what Scott said. That's great advice. Everything a photographer says should just be used as a reference not necessarily taken as biblical truth.

That's interesting that you mentioned Scott Smith because I checked out his site and the one thing that stood out to me is that his backgrounds are really well controlled even in bright backlit type situations He also does a great job of controlling the background through composition so that it never distracts from the subject. He's really good at that

I'm glad Wendy. If you have any questions about doing this just ask. Sometimes just having things explained in a different way can help to understand a concept.

I didn't invent anything that hasn't already been taught or written about but I just don't see many people taking the time to break it down in a way that makes sense, espacially to a novice or someone just starting out. I know what it's like to be completely lost with a million questions and no one giving me answers or explanations that made sense.

WOW! Thanks TMR! Very informative. As soon as I get a good lighting setup, I'll test out that method. I'll have to buy a light meter, and a few other things, but I am determined to get this right!. Thanks again, and I'm sure I'll be PMing you with other questions.

You can take the kid out of California, but you can't take the California out of the kid
