Looks like you haven't got hold of manual yet. You can download it from the Canon site. In the meantime, Press on the joystick and the back screen will light up showing you the various options you can use including metering methods. In the manual it's on Page 100.

Ray

Yes, I see that...same thing on the XTI but on the XTI there is a custom function to put the camera meter into Average, that is not in the other modes of metering..the 50D does not have an Average..only a Centerweighted Average..the Average I'm talking about is not the center one but a regular Average metering mode that can be set by a custom function like the XTI can..surely as good as the 50D is, it is not going to let an XTI have functions that it doesn't?

The XTi has both an evaluative metering mode and a full-frame averaging mode? I'd never heard of that before.

The full-frame "averaging" mode on the 50D is the evaluative metering mode, but it tries to be "smart" about metering the frame. Which is to say, it tries to figure out what kind of scene it's looking at (e.g., backlit versus normally lit) and sets the exposure accordingly.

I don't recall seeing any custom function on the 50D that changes the way any of the metering modes work.

I have both the XTi and 50D....

Checking now..........

The XTi has only two metering settings "Evaluative" and "Average"

The 50D has four metering settings "Center-weighted Average; Partial; Spot and Evaluative.

I'll take a wild guess and say that the XTi "Average" metering setting equals the 50D's "Center-weighted Average" metering setting. Another guess is Canon re-named it to be more descriptive with it's function and separate it from the Partial metering setting.

the XTI has the same as the 50D except for the spot meter....has Center weighted, evaluative and partial...but if you go look at the custom settings there is a custom for Average...totally different than center weighted average....I'm just surprised the 50D doesn't have it..it is custom function 8 under ETTL II on the XTI...

ETTL governs flash, so the function you're talking about governs how metering is done for the flash, not how it's done for the exposure.

The corresponding setting on the 50D is under "Flash Control" -> "Built-in flash func. setting" -> "E TTL II"

EDIT: The above isn't a custom function, it's a setting on the third tools page in the menu.

No worries. There's a lot to learn about these cameras.
