How do I get a 16 bit file? I open and edit files in RAW (ACR) and then just open file which takes me to Elements via Tiff. I think I am missing something. Someone enlighten me if there's a better way

Edit: I think I found it. When in Camera RAW at the bottom is a drop down menu that shows 8 bit and 16 bit so I guess I'd have to choose 16 bit. What would be the affect of choosing 16 bit after I opened the image to PSE7?

Btw, I noticed when I accidentally save a file to psd it grew to something like 64 mbs

Thanks

Al

...But if the image file will be worked on extensively like contrast, highlight and shadow recovery, saturation then it's best to use a 16-bit file such as a Tiff or psd. 16-bit files can be stretched, pushed and pulled extensively more without image degradation than an 8-bit file.

I don't know Elements at all. Is it limited to 8-bit files? If so, your best bet is to do the majority of work in Camera Raw on Raw images. Also the Camera Raw window, in CS4, has the working color space and bit size on bottom. It can be clicked on to change the parameters. Does Camera Raw Elements have that and if so what is it set to?

Best,

John

Yeah there's a drop down box with 8 or 16 bit selection. I assume this is where I change from 8 to 16 bit.

I like the photos, especially the PP you did with the donuts picture. I'm curious as to why you use so much vignetting?

Russkny, the preset I used is called COL Dragan 5. I've been fumbling around in my computers but for the life of me, I can't find any documentation on where I downloaded the preset from. But a good bet is to try presetsheaven.com or just follow the google trail for COL Dragan.

Good Luck.
Nik

If anyone is interested COL Dragan 5 can be found here: http://github.com/fmeyer/lightroom-plugins (external link)

ACR under Elements lets you set the bit depth but I don't think Elements supports various color spaces. There certainly isn't a dropdown for it on the Elements ACR window.

Elements isn't limited to 8-bit files, but the set of 16-bit operations available is limited compared with the set of 8-bit operations. That's with PSE 6 under the Mac, though. The current version of PSE might be different.

Thanks! As for the vignetting, idk. Sometimes i enjoy it and sometimes i dont like it. So i really have no idea why i use so much sometimes..and sometimes i dont at all. Its just the feel i get from certain photos i guess....

Hey... trying out the new Lightroom 3 Beta... really cleans up the 50D noise and banding pattern. The below image @ ISO 400 (10% crop of image) was under-exposed by about 1.85 stops due to flash not recycling in time. Settings are identical in both apps:

The next two were with a Canon 10-22 and I almost always shoot it at f/8 and ISO100 at 10mm
