Just wanted to be pointed in a direction, been using SD for 4 yrs and I need CF for the 50D. I'm sure a few 4 or 8gb's will suit my needs.

what write speed is adequate for the 50D shooting Raw?

I'm currently using 2 8g sandisk extreme IV's, which are 45mb/s speed, and they perform excellent. When shooting raw, I get about 320-400 pictures per card on average.

How does the 50D do at ISO 3200? Does anyone have some photos at this speed?
I get good shots at ISO 1600 with my XS, and wonder if I can get clean shots with the 50D at 3200??

my 50D 1600 shots are noisy, but usually not terrible. canons software does an ok job of getting rid of a lot of it. with the same glass it shouldn't be much different at 1600 from your XS since it has the same sensor in it. ive yet to shoot above 1600 yet so i can help you there.

Not true, the Xs has a different sensor. The T1i has the same sensor as the 50D.

There has been a few ISO-3200 shots posted in the thread over the last 10 pages or so, including 1 from myself. It does a pretty good job, if you expose to the right a bit.

i though they used the same 1.6 crop sensor, guess i was mistaken (and misinformed). i was told buying a 50D would net no less noise @ iso 1600 than my XSi because it had the same sensor in it.

The sensors are the same size (1.6 crop) but they are different.

Canon has numerous 1.6 crop sensors. The 1.6 is a term used to describe the sensor, though it has no relation to physical size or megapixels, as it is the difference factor between "Crop" and "Full frame". The 1.6 or aps-c sensor is 22.3mm x 14.9mm in the 50D and 22.2mm x 14.8mm in the XSi according to Canon USA. All the canon xxD and xxxD and xxxxD cameras are this approximate size, as well as the 7D. The sensors are different though, both by design and image size. The rebel xt was 8.2mp, whereas the rebel xsi is 12.2mp, and the T1i and 50D are 15.1. The T1i and 50D also use the same Digic 4 processor, where the XSi and older cameras use the Digic 3 or Digic 2.

You can find alot of info on these cameras between usa.canon.com and dpreview.com, and the nice thing about dpreview.com is they break things down and show pictures to understand what they're talking about.

Use the noiseware free edition. The one click default setting works great.

I have a 16GB that I keep in the camera 90% of the time. It holds 670+ Raw shots. I just download to my Toshiba every week or so and never remove the card. I think its a Kingston. I also have an 8GB card and don't even know what brand it is. They are all about the same as far as I have seen.

Compact Flash Cards: Will a 150x card be adequate for everyday use?

Will it be ok for continuous shooting?

Shouldn't be too horribly bad. I know people that use 133x cards on highspeed bust mode with no issues to speak of. I like the extreme iv, because I came from an old seagate photo hard drive, so it was a HUGE leap for me. I can say though, transferring files from the card to the computer, the card speed makes a huge difference. Doesn't matter whether it's being downloaded directly from the card, or via the camera to the computer, it's mush faster with a faster card.

artyH,

I have a whole shoot done at 3200 for my daughters cheer comps in the Sun national bank arena in Trenton NJ. They came out pretty good. Some needed more PP than others but good overall. I only had a Canon 70-200mm f/4L with me at the time for the range and was not allowed to use flash of any kind. I can not post the images with the girls from the cheer squad without releases from the parents but I can post a shot I took of the banner from way up in the 2nd tear seating to give you an idea. No PP just converted. Hope this helps.
