I'd say if that were his garage, he has a pretty big hoarding problem.

I'd be happy if hoarding Aston Martins was my only problem.

There have been some other posts/threads about this. It's apparently a known bug if you're importing your images via Windows Explorer in either XP or Win7 (not sure which, or maybe both). Try using a card reader and/or DPP/Lightroom to import your images instead, see if that cures it. (I'm on a Mac, so can't try it for myself to see.)

I am importing it to XP through the camera directly to a folder, so this very well may be a clue, Thanks

Thank you, I was doing it more for the having the jpg for just having, but also having a RAW for any that I wanted to do further editing with. I had an Xt that did things correct on this setting hence my confusion. Thank you for trying to help me sort it out.

OK Astro, here it goes:

I set my 50D to RAW+JPG. In the camera menu it shows:
RAW 15M 4752x3168 x 15M 4752x3168 (Largest RAW + Largest JPG)

I took a picture and the camera created 2 files as expected.
I checked the files on the CF card in the card reader:
RAW: 20,553 KB
JPG: 5,831 KB

I then imported the files as I usually do, using Canon utility:
RAW: 21,045 KB
JPG: 5,970 KB

All that makes sense to me. The Canon utility adds about 1KB to the picture - Camera serial#, Copyright info and some other proprietary stuff.

In other words, I have no idea what your problem could be.

Sorry.

And here I thought the most important thing was a little common (web) courtesy.

You might start with yourself. You seem to be in the minority with your previous statement also...

I'm just saying....

I just looked in the settings and you can have it set to:
Raw + Jpeg
SRaw + JPeg
SRaw2 + Jpeg.

That would account for both files potentially being the same or similar size "if" you are using one of the SRaw's...

And that is what i would expect too. I normally go straight from camera to folder though which was said earlier to be a known issue, so once I get home from work I plan to try that. Thank you all for helping me track this down, will let you know my results tonight. Betting if it works as expected on the 50D, my 450D will follow suit and work as well.

This got it, I used the EOS utility to offload them and got the desired result. Thanks all for putting up with me on this one the last few days

I'm very interested in getting the 50D but have heard that it doesn't work well with some lens.

I have the Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-300IS does anybody know what the 50D is like with these lens as I would hate to buy the body then not be able to get the best out of it because I can't afford an L lens yet?

Thanks :D

Sounds like you're listening to gear collectors instead of photographers.

What do you mean by "it doesn't work well with some lenses"? Certainly there are some lenses more highly regarded for their image quality than others, but that has nothing to do with the camera body itself. I have the 70-300 and it works fine on my 50D. Look through the images in this thread and you'll find plenty of great images which were shot by a 50D with non-L lenses. Look through the 70-300 lens thread in the lens sample forum and you'll see many good images also - some of which were shot with a 50D. There's nothing "magic" about a 50D which makes lenses that work perfectly well on other cameras suddenly turn to mush.

There are plenty of people on internet photography forums who believe that you just can't shoot a decent image without an L lens (and Canon's marketing division loves them). There are also plenty of people who apparently didn't get the memo, and are busy taking great photographs using non-L lenses instead of obsessing over the fact that the gear in their sig doesn't look as good as others'.
