Kent,

Very expressive on President-elect Obama's part. Good capture.

Was this a chance encounter, perhaps? Was this an assignment?

Also, I noticed the Getty Images part of the watermark. Do you work for them?

Thanks for the patience in answering these questions :) .

Mahalo twoshadows. I think he was telling the little girl to vote. ;)

I'm a stringer for Getty, among other news agencies in Hawaii. This was actually my first freelance assignment...the Obama PressPool.

I must say the 50D handles high ASA very nicely. I love it!

Thanks for the answers, Kent. I am a freelance for a couple of papers in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. I really like the work (but don't tell my editors, lol).

Pretty plum first assignment ;) . My first assignment was to cover Marcia Gay Harden. I didn't even know who she was at the time and had to google her name to find a pic of her so I knew what she looked like, lol.

Regarding the 50D: I like it better than the 1DmkIIn that I had, especially because of the high iso performance. I now use a 50D and 5D for my PJ work and I think the two formats make a good combo.

Aloha!

Very cool. I've been applying for newspaper internships all over since I'm a junior in college. it was a very plum first assignment. hehe. I was scared at first but after the AFP, Reutuers, and AP Photographers took me under their wing, i learned alot, and i'm grateful for it.

RE: 50D
high ASA Performance is really nice! I was considering getting a 5Dmk2 and ditching my 1Dmk2N (especially since its at Canon - Irvine right now, but i really do like the pro body feel. I used a 1Dmk3 for the 12 days obama was in town, and it really shone. The camera kicked some butt, and had barely any focus issues... (only 2-3 shots that i lost due to focusing)

this camera is wicked awesome.

This is a GREAT thread. Love all the sample pics everyone is posting.

I purchased my 50D last weekend (actually returned the XTi because it stopped working & paid and extra G for the 50D). Unfortunately I had to leave that same day for a week for work. Can't wait to get back and play with my new toy. The pictures I've seen here lead me to believe I made the right choice going from the XTi to the 50D instead of the XSi the store wanted to give me.

I need some opinions... I shoot alot of sports (soccer, tennis, track, XC). Which setting would be better AV or TV to freeze the action. I took thousands of photos with the XTi but they seemed very soft or OOF. Hope to post some samples of my own. Perhaps I'll go to the pond and shoot a duck! Is it still hunting season:lol:

Nice pictures. I've always wanted to know how people take this one particular picture. How did you bring the colors out like that in a black and white picture?

Freeze action your controlling shutter speed, so want to use TV mode.

XTi is an amazing camera, any OOF is probably user error or wrong focus area. Unless of course you have a defective camera, the XTi takes pictures on par with my 50D.
