A correctly exposed photo at ISO 400 is going to have very minimal noise. However, an underexposed shot is going to look quite noisy. Your shot is underexposed.

What would you guys suggest for low-light photography with minimal grain? Just get the ISO down as far as possible what's practical with my aperture & shutter for the conditions in the shot?

Here's a recent shot (not mine) from this thread:

I just checked the EXIF on that one. ISO 100, how about that.

Another recent shot (not mine) that I like from this thread:

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4153/5035025191_0484840b9c_z.jpg

Hmm..with a closer look, I'm seeing some grain there. But I only noticed because I made a point to look for it. No EXIF on that one.

Adam, are you reading this? Do you know what your ISO was on that poker shot?

Are you talking about a long exposure low light shot? If so Id go with lowest possible ISO setting, sweet spot f/stop for your lens along with it focused to infinity. Shutter speed wont affect your IQ.

Long exposures at night tend to have a lot more noise. In post, I always use noise reduction on my night shots and most shots in general. I use ISO 100 for all darker shots, unless I don't care about noise.

Here is a shot of mine. Just a quick shot goofing around which I'm not expecting any awards from. I'm hoping you guys can take a look at it and tell me what you think QUALITY wise. I'm afraid my lenses or camera might need to be fixed. This shot is with the 50mm 1.4 @ 5.6

Fair question. The skyline was a bad example.

I am mainly referring to low-lit indoor shots with no flash or enough flash just for fill light (no "hey there's a flash" look).

So that poker table shot is more like what I'm talking about. Well that and the restaurant shot I posted.

Well, you can't tell on the poker shot. It may look like yours. Until blown up at 100%, luminance noise is not too obvious in many shots.

I would use noise reduction personally. Lightroom for example is really good at removing noise. Also, try to expose the shot correctly as possible. I prefer to nail the exposure and if I want a dim atmosphere I lower the exposure in post.

RAID isn't backup, external storage is a must when wanting to keep photographs safe.. both on and off site..

RAID 1 is for backup and protects data against drive failure, and every standard RAID protocol but 0 protects against a single drive. I'd heavily recommend it for any professionals out there who keep RAW files of past clients on their drives.

Personally, I'd find it better to build a storage computer and load up 2TB drives within it in RAID array. It's much safer than externals, as there's less risk of knocking it over or otherwise introducing physical shock into the harddrives.

no RAID is a redundancy, its not a backup - what happens if all the drives fail, or a fire?
