i do shoot a lot in low light and its almost impossible to push 1000 iso and not see grain on the 50d

it depends on what lens you use, I guess. Also, some grain is fine, you can fix it in post. Here is 3200 ISO at 240mm, f/5.6 from last night. Not even L glass either. SOOC.

Neil, these are great!
Do you shoot in RAW and process them in CS or LR?

so when I got my 50D used, it had a piece of dirt in the middle of the viewfinder. I didn't realize I couldn't wipe the focus screen with a piece of microfiber cloth. So it got worse. So I blew it with a rocket blower - didn't help, and I had already somehow scratched it. Ordered a new grid focus screen. Still had dust and hair in my viewfinder. So I found online how to wipe the superimposed indicator plate. Still had dust and hair. So tonight I was trying it again, and somehow scratched it putting it back in....

UGH

So I guess I have to order a new one. I hope that fixes the dust issue for the most part. I think I have to actually call them.

Neil, what is your lighting setup like for those, are you creating the bright spot she is sitting in, or is the fade to black done in post. Either way, it is very effective and nicely done.

My first post in this thread. I've had my 50D (first dSLR) for about four months. The talk of high ISO made me think about this. This was a very cool thundercloud, and my wife and I raced up to the park to get clearer shots of it.

Unfortunately in my haste, I forgot to check my ISO before shooting, and it was set to 1600 from some indoor shots I had done earlier. So, they ended up noisy. I tried some noise reduction in DPP, but being new it didn't help as much as I would have liked. It certainly didn't help as much as having the ISO setting right in the first place.

And, I may as well post a decent photo while I'm at it - keeping in mind I'm new.

I don't mind the noise in the clouds, its not over bearing, at least in the web sized file.

Very interesting flower, what is it?

nice shots! Yeah, if my shutter goes a million miles a second, I always double check stuff if it seems like it shouldn't have gotten enough light on normal settings, haha.

I'm still in love with the sound of the shutter. Can't wait to partner it with a 35L.

the SI Plate was only like $6 plus shipping. I got two just in case, an $9 for second day shipping since I wanted it fast. Really nice lady.

Yeah, though I'm still a little disappointed that I didn't check the ISO first, it's not terrible - at least I got the photos. In fact the noise could add some character in the right sized print I suppose.

The flower is a water lily. Here's another shot that shows the whole flower - not sure if it's the same exact flower though. These were shot at our local botanical gardens.
