We have a new installer (simplified) :)

http://groups.google.com …ow_docid=ab19de1d4094d969 (external link)

Now the procedure is basically "format the card, copy ML files, upgrade firmware, done".

And a new movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxxxVE_9ugw (external link)

Here's a quickie one:
Can anyone confirm that 50D's micro-adjustment works with non-Canon lenses?
Specifically,with Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC and 28-75 2.8?
TIA!

I did try this new version with a new card and it works very well! Cool! No need to make the card bootable anymore indeed.
Still a lot of questions Alex:
1. If I want to try a new build, do I have to clear again all settings in the camera prior to install? Or just put another card with the new version and update firmware?
2. Can I experiment with one version on one card and another version on another card? Just to compare easily? Or do I have to change all the cards?
Can you confirm, if I have 2 different versions on 2 different cards, I have to update the firmware each time I change CF?
3. How can we manage the focus other than manually? I thought we had a kind of autofocus in movie mode with LV, by pushing on AF-on button. It did work with previous version (14/10). It seems now working in a totally different way with this newer version? If I push the button, I can hear now 2 additional mirror moves, than the focus is achieved! Is it suitable that way?
Your feedback is more than welcome Alex!
Many thanks
Erick

Erick:
1. this step is actually optional, it's there just to make sure everyone installs with the same settings known to work. Some particular settings might interfere with the installer (in past versions, sensor cleaning with display off was causing problems, now it's fixed).

2. sure, you can also exchange settings between versions. You have to upgrade firmware only once for each card (to make them bootable). Or after you format the card from the PC.

3. You may have the quick focus active. Autofocus in movie mode is not really useful, virtually all serious users focus manually. For movie with autofocus, a compact video camera is much better.

If you have the IS trick enabled, or if you take photos while recording, it's known to crash.

To check, try recording with Canon firmware (without ML). If it still crashes, it's a Canon bug. If it doesn't, it's a ML bug and can be fixed.

Hi Alex, not sure what you mean by record with canon firmware???

The lens it was crashing on was the pre OS sigma snd what it did was seem to be fine, but when I tried to stop recording it was then I noticed it locked up. Battery door open was the only way to stop it. I still haven't had a chance to try it again, but will do so tomorrow and see if I an get it to be repeatable. Def not trying to take photos at the same time.

Also my usual method of transferring files (images) from card to PC is via USB cable as I have a pretty cheapo card reader. With ML installed and I try this, explorer locks up every time. (win7 64) I have to remove the card and use the reader. Is this a known issue?

but let me just say, the very quick and basic video I have done is awesome to look at!!! Thanks once again for doing this!

To record with canon firmware, enable movie recording, then start the camera without ML (format the card). Then press SET :)

If you use the IS hack, you have to press the shutter half-way before you can use the buttons (even if the lens doesn't have IS).

I'm not aware of any USB issues, but I'll check it. On my cameras it works without problems.

Still not getting you on the record with canon firmware? If I format the card aren't I simply using std 1.08 canon 50D firmware....as in no video...hence the need for ML on a 50D?

I will check that half press thing and IS hack and make sure that is or isn't my problem.

Just tried to copy from USB into the camera direct again, and got a "not responding error" and have to restart explorer, if I connect it to card reader and off it goes (albeit very slow!)

You can't record with the Canon firmware because the 50D does not do video out of the box. I think a1ex is referring to the Canons that can record video.

You bet? :D

Yes, you can record with vanilla 50D firmware from Canon, without ML. Just follow my instructions from the post above.

+1.
Believe him, "we" early testers discovered that if movie mode is enabled and you put a non ml card into the 50D the camera can still record movies.
;)
