Headsick - wonderful details on the eagleā€¦ which lens, how far away were you?

Thanks. This was taken with the 100-400L. Focal length was 200mm, and according to the exif, the eagle was about 44 meters away, which sounds about right.

shouldn't worry about high ISO capabilities of this body - 3200-12800 if you have to use it to get the shot. use it :)

It all depends on the settings the camera is using, and the exposure. For example, the 50D tends to produce cleaner images at normal full stop ISO's (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200), and especially at the lower end of that. Also, if you expose to the right (aka ETTR), which is to over-expose the image, just a bit, you tend to get a better balanced, and cleaner image, especially when the exposure is brought back down in post. Along with that, the 50D really prefers high quality glass, but there's plenty of examples in this thread using lower end glass that are still fantastic. My recommendation is to shoot, a lot, and try different settings. Stay away from full auto, especially on the ISO. You may also want to consider turning off in-camera noise reduction and the auto lighting optimizer (ALO).

thanks. i was trying to stick to ISO200 for the most part. it was pretty sunny, so no issues there. got the good glass, just need the skill :p
ill put up a sample with EXIF tonight when i get home. i cant remember if i ETTR'd, probably not. im sure LR3 can clean up most of the noise.... but i was looking at a coworkers 5DIII images handheld at night and was very envious!!!!
