Does anyone know the custom cumction setting to allow the focusing with the * on the 50D? I'm reading throught the maual and can't seem to find it.

The 40D uses the AF-on button for AF, while permitting the * button to be retained for FEL usage without giving that up. If you want, you can use CFn IV-2 to swap the AF-on and * buttons for their assignments.

What I am looking to do, is separate the shutter button so that the shutter button only locks exposure and trips the shutter. I am looking to have the * focus for me.

The IV-2 doesn't do that. I already tried it. But I thank you for your reply!

Described well here http://www.dpreview.co​m …ws/canoneos50d/​page12.asp . Looks to me like it's IV-1 option 3: AE lock / Metering + AF start that you want. (Shutter would do AE lock and shutter, AF-ON would do metering and AF start.

You set CFn IV-1-n first, then you swap button assignments with CFn IV-2, in order to have * control focus for you.

If he want to AE lock and not just meter with shutter button half press I believe it's IV-1 3 and not IV-1 2 that he wants.

With C.Fn IV 1 3 exposure is locked with shutter half pressed.
With C.Fn IV 1 2 it is locked (and exposure is taken) at the moment the shutter is pressed all the way.
In this case half pressed shutter button doesn’t do anything.

That’s what you’ll get with either C.Fn IV 1 2 or 3.
If you want to focus with * button rather than AF-ON button, you have to apply C.Fn IV 2 1 too, as Wilt already explained in posts #2 and #6.

do either of these affect continuous shooting?

eg if AE is locked on a half press, will it lock that for the entire burst when using continuous shooting? If so, does metering+AE lock when the full shutter is released re-meter for every shot in a burst?

Yes and no.
With AE locked on shutter button half pressed (C.Fn IV 1-3), the same exposure will be in effect throughout the whole burst.
If the shutter is released, new metering takes effect and it gets locked with the next half press.

To have each shot in the burst re-metered, you have to use C.Fn IV 1-2.
