For my Macro photography I bought off e-bay a bracket mount that allows me to mount my 580exII forward and above the lens. This has some angle adjustment, but I really need some sort of ball and socket between the bracket and the flash for real control.

Anyone know what such a thing might be called so I can troll around on ebay or similar to find?

thanks,

I have one of these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …H1004_Mini_Ball_Head.html (external link)

Works great for holding flashes and it's about the size of a 35mm film canister.

What I use....

I copied my setup from the one Dr. Deepak Rao, of Bangalore, India, uses. Deepak is an excellent macro photographer.

IMO, the very best flash macro setup is to use a Siegelite flash bracket which can be articulated to place your flash virtually anyplace. The Siegelite is no longer manufactured but, is often available on eBay at a very low price. Right now, there are two eBay auctions for this bracket; a "buy-it-now" auction for $15.00 with free shipping and a standard auction. I have linked to both of these.

I use a Lumiquest softbox on my 550EX (I once used a 420EX but, switched to the 550EX because of better manual capability). There is however, a Chinese knock-off of the Lumiquest offered on eBay at a "buy-it-now" price of $9.00.

IMO you cannot beat this setup and you especially could not beat it for a total of $24.00 plus a few bucks shipping for the softbox.
