I just ordered this lens and a 7D. I am looking forward to using it as a walk around lens

I think you will enjoy it. the IS is very good, Image quality is pretty good at most focal lengths.

I seem to get good results at 18mm wide open, and at 200mm wide open.

if you are getting this in a kit like I did, an excellent hood came with it. you will need a hood with this lens.

Focus is fast and accurate, only it is a little noisier, and the focus ring turns. The lens does not turn though.

the zoom lock is a handy feature on this lens, because it will definitley creep.

I often here 'superzoom' as an end-all discussion... Can't be good... beware, it's a superzoom.

Actually it's a super zoom...

Here are some comparison shots.

FOV 70 mm Downtown Houston

Here is the superzoom compared to Canon's vaunted EF 24-70 L MkII

...and here is the FOV at 200 mm Triboro bridge NYC

the 18-200 compared to Canon's other vaunted zoom EF 70-200 L MkII

There are points that the two L lenses are better (CA for one, AF speed, f2.8) but collectively they cost almost 8 times as much as the super zoom. On top of that, the 18-200 leaves them in the dust in the 18-24 mm range! :D

I just picked up the Canon 18-200 yesterday. I have to say that I am really impressed with the IQ of this lens. I also heard about poor image quality of the super zooms, but if that's true, this must be the exception. I'm like a little kid with a new toy. I'm having trouble putting it down. It focuses quickly, IQ is outstanding, and if I have to find fault, it's a bit on the heavier side. But it is a hell of a lot lighter than a bag full of lenses.

In actual use, the Canon 18-200mm IS lens has proven to be a pleasantly versatile and effective unit. There's a good chance that the people who enjoy complaining about "poor image quality of the super zooms" have never used one of the lenses. However, that's been proven to be a typical online occurrence. (external link)

This lens, like most good quality lenses, can provide excellent results if used correctly. Find the parameters where it performs best and you will generally be satisfied with its performance. Most of the process in achieving good results, lies in the photographer, not the equipment. With all that said, when I go somewhere that I cannot pack multiple lenses, this is the lens I choose, and it is very versatile.

Oh come on! None of these photos were taken with a super zoom. Everybody knows that you have to have high-end L glass to get great shots.
