May 31, 2013 16:05 | #260 I often here 'superzoom' as an end-all discussion... Can't be good... beware, it's a superzoom. Here is the superzoom compared to Canon's vaunted EF 24-70 L MkII IMAGE LINK: http://s37.photobucket.com …ison_zps4bd2a96f.jpg.html ...and here is the FOV at 200 mm Triboro bridge NYC IMAGE LINK: http://s37.photobucket.com …on/IMG_3162g1024.jpg.html the 18-200 compared to Canon's other vaunted zoom EF 70-200 L MkII IMAGE LINK: http://s37.photobucket.com …/70200_18200comp.jpg.html There are points that the two L lenses are better (CA for one, AF speed, f2.8) but collectively they cost almost 8 times as much as the super zoom. On top of that, the 18-200 leaves them in the dust in the 18-24 mm range! ![]() Gerry

I also heard about poor image quality of the super zooms, but if that's true, this must be the exception. I'm like a little kid with a new toy. I'm having trouble putting it down. It focuses quickly, IQ is outstanding, and if I have to find fault, it's a bit on the heavier side. But it is a hell of a lot lighter than a bag full of lenses.

In actual use, the Canon 18-200mm IS lens has proven to be a pleasantly versatile and effective unit. There's a good chance that the people who enjoy complaining about "poor image quality of the super zooms" have never used one of the lenses. However, that's been proven to be a typical online occurrence.

This lens, like most good quality lenses, can provide excellent results if used correctly. Find the parameters where it performs best and you will generally be satisfied with its performance. Most of the process in achieving good results, lies in the photographer, not the equipment. With all that said, when I go somewhere that I cannot pack multiple lenses, this is the lens I choose, and it is very versatile.
