My studio stuff arrived tonight. It took forever to get it set up and then I was just winging it, not having any idea how to set my new vivitar flash. I need another off camera shoe cord to make it really work well (the trigger has to sit between the hotshoe connector and the flash, which makes the whole thing too tall to sit in the softbox!), but I had fun testing it out for a few minutes before I had to send my son to bed. School night.

I only had time for 10ish shots and I picked these to process. I can tell I'm going to have a lot of fun with this.. and that I'm going to become completely addicted to paper colors... especially since shipping is FREE! I'm sorry that these aren't too exciting. I basically just picked a spot on the floor and told him to stand there... I promise I'll get more creative later. :)

2. I clearly have no direction at all on B&W because I really don't prefer it, but I really need to develop a style since everyone else seems to love B&W! I don't like the lighting in this one. I needed to turn it down on the right, which I did on the other 2 shots.

wow - these are great. You did very well, especially considering you just set it up and were winging it!! That paper looks great!

I'm envious- I want studio stuff too! What all did you get?

I got the Savage port-a-stand and 3 rolls of paper. Then for lights I'm using my 430EX into an umbrella and my new Vivitar in an XS Litedome softbox. I can tell that I am going to want to upgrade to a larger softbox just because the light stand has a minimum height and that makes the softbox a bit too high for anyone who isn't my son's height.

I have to figure out where to place the lights to get the catchlights in the right place, but I have the whole winter for that. :)

I didn't know B&H offered free shipping

I always pick my paper up because it cost so much to ship

It's free if you join the NAPP. That membership is $99 and you get a ton of stuff and discounts... one of those things is free shipping from B&H. My initial order was over $40 in shipping, so the membership has almost paid for itself already!
