So, you know, actually, it's only, like, well, once every 6 seconds.:)

It's a lot better than a Colour Sergeant I once had who used the "F" word a lot more often.:)

I found this to be amusing and thought you guys might also get a kick out of it.

We all have patterns of speech and little idiosyncrasies but Mark Cleghorn, the photographer that does all the video demos for Lastolite has an interesting quirk in his vocabulary.

He uses the word 'actually' an inordinate number of times in a a very short period, to the point of it becoming extremely obvious and perhaps a bit annoying.

You can watch any of the video demos (external link) to see what I mean and I took 2 of them just for the fun of it and counted the number of times the word is used.

I
I took a look at the first 2 videos on this page (external link).

In the first video on shooting Low Key images, which is 2:23 in length he uses 'actually' 21 times.

In the second video on shooting Mid Key, which is 3:33 he uses it 30 times.

I actually found that it was actually a bit overbearing, actually. ;)

I was seeing the first two videos about umbrellas, half way through the second one I closed the tab lol... he seems to use the word when he gets carried away :D

He uses it as soon as he starts to open his mouth. Maybe you missed the first few. In some of the videos he not only says actually but he also uses the word actual. UGH!

He goes to the actually word when he is nervous, as if to prevent a studder.

I think he does have a stutter but he dives right in with actually. It's definitely something he's been doing for a long time and has become a part of his speech. He wastes no time, actually.

LOL, actually my neighbor says "actually" at least two times in every sentence and has actually done so for years. I've got to show the videos to my wife!

I'm reviving this thread because of an email I just received. It's funny how people want to see what they want to see when reading posts.

When I started this thread, and then commented along the way, I made mention of the overuse of the word 'actually'. I NEVER commented on or poked fun at Mark Cleghorn's stutter.

Other people that chimed in on this thread also commented on the overuse of actually and none of them made any negative comment about Mark's stutter.

So, today I get an email from someone that was digging around looking for information about Mark Cleghorn and came across this thread. It was apparent that he thought the thread was poking fun at the stutter. This person made a point to let me know that he stutters and then proceeded to insult me and make comments about my gear list being an excuse for lacking creative skill.

Well... if we run with that and assume that I do buy gear to compensate for not having creative skill then I don't see how that has any bearing on Mark or his stutter or use of the work actually.

Actually, I just don't get it.

It should be noted that these days Mark C's Lastolite videos are almost 100% actually-free.

Mark seems like a very OK guy. He was working the Lastolite display at the 2009 PhotoPlus Expo here in NY. He was interacting quite good-naturedly with Expo attendees.

The stutter was mentioned, but it did not come off as making fun. The someone probably either has some speaking difficulties or has someone very close to them who does. Regardless, there does not seem to be any merit to the accusation.

I've not watched the videos, but have been noticing a few people in my office who over use certain terms. "Just so you know" is topping the list.

Personally, I know I use "actually" and "so" more than I should. Hopefully not to the point where it is annoying, though.

Everyone has their quirks, be it the overuse of certain words in their speech or other actions that they or we fall into like a rut and don't usually notice unless somebody else points it out to us.
I didn't notice anyone making fun of Mr. Cleghorn's stuttering, only the overuse of the word actually which is sort of funny how I've never noticed after viewing many of his videos. Either way Mark comes across as a entertaining individual in his videos.
Some people just go looking for a fight where there is none and that's always going to be the sad case that it is.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

I watched some of those videos a while back and never really noticed. I clicked on a video and it seemed like he used the word "actual" more.

Growing up in Socal, I got used to the word "like" being thrown out in every sentence. It's funny when someone from another state points it out.

BTW, never make fun of someone's stutter. Growing up most of the kids made fun of this one kid's stutter. I never did, since I was a pretty nice guy. One day, he decided to make fun of me, so I gave it back to him. I don't think I ever did it more than once. Anyway, years later I was talking to a friend and my brain just glitched, and I stuttered. It was weird. I knew I was stuttering but couldn't do anything about it. My friend and I were completely puzzled. It freaked me out, but I laughed it off. Karma
