I just got back from a family holiday in Hawkes Bay, and was lucky enough to have fish and chips for dinner up Te Mata Peak one night. While the family was finishing up dinner I was able to spend a little time exploring with the camera. I could have spent hours there, and would have loved to have stayed for the sunset, but the kids wouldn't wait any longer. :(

Anyway here is what I got:

Beautiful Pics!
We go there quite often over the summer. I have pics from almost the same spots as the first three; man I miss it. Gotta love that place.

How long from Auckland to the bay?

It's about 4.5 - 5 hrs in the car, so not a day trip :(
you could easily spend a whole day on and around Te Mata Peak. And if you got bored of taking pictures of mountains there is Te Mata Estate, and Craggy Range wineries (among others) right there. (I mean to photograph of course!!)

It could be a cood spot for a national meet actually. 5 hrs from Auckland, about 4 from Wellington I think, and lots to photograph, and drink.

Thanks to everyone else for your comments.

Most of the LOTR was filmed in the South Island I think, none in Hawkes Bay that I remember (and we were living there at the time.) I do vaguely remember them calling for extras for the 1st Narnia film while we were there, so I think they may have shot some of that in the area.
