I took out my camera tonight to take pictures of the sunset. I set tried to set it up to what the meter said was a proper exposure it would not move off the -2 side. When I took a picture at 1/250 at f11 ISO 640 it held the shutter open for more than 30 seconds. Tried again and same thing. Hit review of the picture and "No Image" was on the display. Switched to the "Basic Zone" and same thing except the exposure was open for about 10 seconds before it stopped recording.

I took off the lens, took out the CF card, reformatted the CF card, took out the battery, and even reset the settings to "new out of the box" and same thing. Any ideas?

Do you use battery grip?

Hmm..
Try removing both batteries for some 20 minutes and try again.

I tried a different Lens and CF card and still same thing. I did not see anything in the manual either. Guess it is going to Canon for a repair .

Try the cold reset first.

Do you know how to do that? The manual say Pg.44 but it does not reset everything just the settings.

Remove both the main battery and the small time/date button battery and let camera sit for at least 20 minutes..

I had it out for 45 minutes. I can shoot in basic and that is it. Manual and the others the shutter will stay open for ~ 30 seconds, and it does not record any images. I also noticed that the camera does not beep any more when "Focus" is achieved and the AF point(s) are not lighting up either. The camera did not reset itself either.

I just went and cleared all the Custom Function settings and all the others back to default. That seems like the only way to "reset" everything to original since I do not see a hard reset option. I also and noticed that the battery is at about 1/2, so I will charge it over night and play with it tomorrow. Maybe it will work, maybe it will not, but time will tell.

Thanks for your help.

Kevin

Well, in that case, you know what you have to do.

I am positive that Canon will fix it in no time!

Well it is working now. Do not know what the problem was but it is taking pictures and actually saving them again. I gues I will have to keep and eye on it.

It sounds like you had your mirror lockup enabled -- when you press the shutter button the mirror flips up. If you don't press it a second time it flips down after 30". It's a common mistake for those of us who use MLU!

Yes, shoot only manual for a week or so and if there is a solid problem, it will show itself again..
