Actually, I'm using the Oly OM system wide angle prime lenses (each about 25 years old) on my 5D with an adapter...several of them combined weigh much less than a single all-encompassing modern-day AF zoom. These lenses are so small and light, that I'm able to stack an Oly 21 and 24, along with a Leica 35, in the same padded compartment of a pack. When hiking/backpacking, I try to lighten my load as much as possible...these lenses allow me to do that, and I don't suffer from any image quality issues.

Do they also make adapters for them to work on the new Oly line? If so are they totally manual lenses or are they just lacking AF? Are there any links around for products of that age for me to look at?

Canon ~ 7D, 1D MkIIn, 5D, 20D, 10D, 100-400L IS, 70-200 2.8L IS, 24-105 f4L IS, 17-40 f4L, 135mm f2L, 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 50mm 2.5 macro, Ext. tubes, TC's 1.4 & 2.0, Feisol 3441-S CF Tpod, Gitzo Traveler Mpod, Acratech ballhead, 550EX, 200EG bag, Epson Pro 3800 printer.

Don't know about adapters for use on the modern-day Olympus cameras. They are totally manual focus, and you must use stop-down metering (which isn't as diffcult as it sounds). Simply open the lens completely, compose and focus, stop it down to the desired aperture, depress the shutter. Finished. You can find plenty of them on ebay...just search for OM Zuiko and plenty come up. Didn't mean to hijack the Op's post, but these are some lightweight alternatives.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the OP [<<< Midnight Rider >>>] had a late night and hasn't looked at the net yet. I'd prolly be getting pounded by now for my opinion if he was up! LOL

WOW this thread has grown. Starting to turn into a very usable debate.
So in short. I am not really fond of using a standard backpack of any kind to carry my gear. I have paid a lot of money for my gear and I will continue to do so until I have satisfied my dream list. That being said I want to place the gear in a proper bag that would offer the protection that the gear needs. But thanks for the suggestion.
Two shooters going off at the same time and splitting the load sounds like a great idea and I may try that. For the most part I shoot solo so this suggestion will come in handy sometime but not often.
Many people are in so many words calling me nutts for wanting to lug around this amount of gear and that is fine. But why would I spend so much money to leave it behind. This list is mainly primes and yes there are ways to make the 85mm replace the 50mm. Just step back right? How much detail do you think you lose by doing that? The 17-40mm and the 24-105mm should cover just about any walk around but I like natural light and notice there is not a tripod on that list. While walking down trails with tree canopys covering 90% of the sky fast primes are irreplacable.
I know it may be overkill to take all of this but most of my shooting is at least 40 miles away from home and I refuse to leave my extra lenses in the car ( last time I had to replace the back glass and the gear ).

I liked the suggestion to load up the GF but she is not the outdoor type.

Thanks all for your responses.

I grabbed one of the National Geographic Lrg Backpacks which I guess are made by Bogen/Manfrotto:

info can be had here (external link).

It has the bonus of having a compartment for a laptop. It's well padded. The nice part of the material is it's canvas which can actually be cooler to wear because of the evaporative cooling effect. It also has a great waist strap and feels wonderful to wear even w/o the belt.

I did treat it with Nikwax for Canvas to waterproof the thing. Lots of great pockets and lots of room and pockets. It's sort of spendy retail but I found mine here essentially new from a fellow POTN'er for a very nice price.

I normally use Tom Bihn bags for everyything but since he has no camera sort of bags I decided to give the NG a try and the construction is at least as good. I have used mine on hikes, day trips, the zoo even just to toss everything in the truck and go. With some extra dividers insde I am sure it would hold everything you list w/o a problem. Anyway just my experience with the bag. Oh, it also comes with a rain cover just in case...and the Nikwax helps keep it clean up easily with soap and water now and then...

Real men shoot Pentax because we're born with our own Canon's!!
{Ok...ok, some of use just have a PnS but it it always makes me happy! :D}
Pentax K5, K20D, Three Amigos (Pentax FA 31/1.8 Limited Silver, Pentax FA 43/1.9 Limited Silver, Pentax FA 77/1.8 Limited Silver), Pentax DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited, Sigma 24-60/2.8

Not only a late night but a long day as well. My gf runs in to the kitchen this morning and tells me to go outside and look at my car. Well I did and she ran my hhr into my sentra. So how exactly do you sue yourself again?:D
I have been on the phone all day trying to get it covered. After this I am moving my homeowners and auto to the same company.

Just for that, you SHOULD make her carry all of your gear... ;) Good luck with the insurance company.
