Hello,

I've installed the beta profiles. I'm not sure how to open the 50d pics in Lightroom. I've tried and it won't do it. What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

I assume you're shooting RAW files? The answer is likely to be on the Adobe forums. I would search there for an answer, but if you can provide more details, you might be able to get more help here. Wish I could tell you more.

you can't because LR hasn't been updated yet. If you use LR before 2.0, you won't get an update for it. I suggest you use dpp until the LR update in a week or two

The 'beta profiles' you have are just Adobe's best guess representation of the Canon picture styles. However, as already said the ACR part of Lightroom has yet to be updated to handle 50D raw files

There is a beta/RC Lightroom 2.1 available that works, but reports are it mangles high ISO output from the 50D.

This is a normal problem with any new camera model, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone. I'll use DPP until Lightroom is updated.

I have the same issue. Is there someplace I can be watching for the update?

Lightroom Journal:
http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/ (external link)

If you download the Lightroom v2.1 release candidate, note that "Camera Raw is often able to provide unofficial or preliminary support for new camera raw formats. While this support is not fully tested and certified by our Quality Engineering team it does allow photographers who have acquired more recent camera models to open and work with their raw files. In Camera Raw 4.6, photographers with the following cameras will be able to utilize this preliminary support: Canon Rebel XS, Canon 50D, Olympus SP-565 UZ, Sony A900 and Sigma DP1."

i.e. It will import 50D raw files, but they're not finished working on the 50D support as of yet so it should be considered beta quality at best. And yes, this will be an issue for all brand new cameras. I personally won't buy a new camera until it's fully supported in Lightroom, just because there wouldn't be much point for me.

I just picked up a 50D today (yeah, it will be my backup cam to the 5DMkII which is on order, my existing cams are going to my wife).... anyways, I have client shoots in the next weeks and with that cam I'll just shot raw use Canon DPP to convert to DNG and then import the DNG files into Lightroom. Sure it's not a super fun extra step, but it will work for a few weeks until Lightroom 2.1 is released.

Unless there is some new feature in DPP that I am unaware of; DPP cannot convert RAW files to DNG format.

2.1 is available as a Release Candidate. It read the 50D RAWs I downloaded from Imaging Resource just fine. The only catch I see is that under Calibration it displays "beta" and none of the other options are even shown, let alone selectable.

I've been using the LR RC 2.1 and it works fine on my 50D files. To be perfectly honest, the JPEG's from the 50D are so good, it's hard to improve on them with RAW.

Actually so far I still think my 5D is better in terms of image quality (which makes me more excited for the 5DMkII to show up), but the 50D is a great camera.

As for JPEG's being so good... depends on what/how you shoot. For me, white balance and exposure are pretty critical and I need the extra net that RAW gives me. Furthermore shooting JPEG gives me an 8bit image to start any edits with vs. the 14bit coming out of the camera and I want all the tonal information I can get prior to doing editing. I do wedding, portrait and commercial and I and my clients can be pretty picky at times so I want to start with as much info as I can get.
