When I was on vacation I would shove my valuables below my laundry in a surplus bag (IE http://cgi.ebay.com …1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 (external link))

You can carry a nice bag, and when you are going somewhere you might doze off shove it in there.

Well ofcourse :)
But there are times when yer sleepin on the train / airports and thieves may not be as tempted to steal something that looks like the hobo outside would have than a shiny expensive backpack :)

Thanks for all the info guyes! Great tips for padding! I'll work something out.

Back when I was just getting into photography, I took an old backpack and modified it for photography; adding padding and cloth and such.

I was not pleased with how it ended up, especially after using a dedicated camera backpack.

My suggestion would be to buy a dedicated camera pack that is used (to give you the aged-look) or 'age' one yourself.

I'm with toyguru and tangypsy. Get a backpack with lots of room for your needs and some inserts for you gear. I used a pacsafe daysafe 100 in Utah and a Mountain Hardware bag for Italy. Both with thinktank lens bags and chimp cadge.

Today I just picked up a North Face Surge bag which is massive. I'm betting I can fit 4 days of cloths, a Macbook Pro 15", Canon 5d w/ 24-105, a 16-35 and speedlight 430. Oh its still with in carry on limits!
