Decided to brave the thunderstorms and stop by the zoo for a bit. The weight is absolutely insane compared to other tele's! 400 is way too tight for my standard uses (even moreso with the 1.4x), but it's fun to play around with every now and then. Injury This one was at 1/30... the DO's IS definitely seems pretty solid.

Mar 20, 2015 08:38 | #219 advaitin - your images are absolutely convincing that the "contrast issues" of the 400mm DO are not as big an issue as people make them out to be.

(3 edits in all) | Mar 21, 2015 08:09 | #220 After taking a few test shots with my new (to me) 400mm DO, I'm going to break the thread rules slightly... these three shots were taken with 3 different lenses. Each lens was mounted to the same 1.4x teleconverter and Canon 7D Mark II. They all have very close to the same amount of post processing applied: some cropping, exposure adjustments, and a little sharpening. ISOs between 100-1000 and apertures ranging from f5.6 to f9. Same species subject in the same location on different days. The lenses are Canon 300mm f2.8L IS, 400mm f4 DO IS, and 600mm f4L IS. Can you tell which is which? And here's one with a 500mm f4L IS + 1Ds III + 430ex for some more measure just because I haven't used the 500mm with the 1.4tc + 7DMKII yet. Disclaimer: yes, I know this is not a perfect test. However, it is pretty real world and after reading a bunch of knocks to the 400mm DO I thought this was an appropriate comparison. Disclaimer #2: don't make a lens buying decision based on comparing these 4 images.

Apr 07, 2015 05:41 | #221 Just bought one of these. They seem to be a loved and hated lens but for the price I got it for it should be awesome. I can't afford a 300 2.8 IS so this is as close as I'd get and 400mm is more useful I found. Looking forward to posting some surf shots Sam

I grabbed a 1.4x iii to use with the lens which was perfect timing as a large storm (verging on cyclone) hit Sydney. This was the Manly to Circular Quay fast ferry battling the swell. Not perfect lighting as you can imagine and I was struggling with 100km/h winds! We also saw waves at Balmoral beach which is a beach inside the harbour, something we rarely see. IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/roJp6h This was taken yesterday, after the storm had died down a bit. Waves were bigger elsewhere but I only had my lunch break to grab a few shots.
