For some of you who want to see what the ISO performance of the 50D is and play with files, feel free to go to this LINK (external link). There are samples for each ISO level. Just be kind and don't over do the downloading. These files are JPEGs, which represent the cameras capability to deal with Noise. All settings are at their standard level. No processing of these images has been done... they are what they are. They actually print very well all the way up through 6400 - very usable. Add you can web-ize the 12800 very easily to be acceptable for web content or news print. ISO 100 is simply cleaner than clean... not bad for the price.

ISO 200 looks really good. You do know with the 1/3rd stop ISO enabled that the camera is just pushing the ISO.

Croasdail ~ I have come to the same conclusion as you based on those samples. ISO6400 cleans up pretty well and I would use it probably at about 33% crop at the most, while ISO12800 I might use at 20% crop at the most.

Still very usable compared to my 30D, with it's ISO3200 being somewhere between ISO6400 and ISO12800 (probably ISO9600 if there was such a thing on the 50D).

I must say I was really very impressed with the ISO1600 shot. Very slight noise which cleaned up easily in Photoshop with Noiseware Pro (some may not even clean it up since it's hardly noticeable when the shot is down-sampled)

My brother-in-law's 20D just died and he picked up a 50D this last weekend. Even though I have a 40D, I was still impressed with the 50D overall. As far as IQ is concerned, I feel that the noise performance isn't any better (or worse) from looking at the pics he took over the weekend.

PS - Nice truck. My dad has a red one just like it.

Wouldn't a more accurate test of the camera's ability of dealing with noise be images of something in low lights?

The 1600 was shot at 1/15 second, and the 3200 at 1/30th. That's a longer exposure than you'd use for people/concert type shots, so what more do you want? Slow shutter speeds help generate noise, and these are slower than most people will ever shoot at high ISO. So what if they were shot at f/9, that has NOTHING to do with noise, its ISO and shutter speed, as well as shadows, in which these shots also have plenty. Sorry, I'm just tired of seeing this canned comment. Different people have different requirements, so their appropriate lighting is different. If its not the test YOU want to see, then don't look.

OP: Nice truck, and excellent test cases. In fact probably the best I've seen. Good subject, slow shutter, and plenty of shadow detail to examine. It does make the 50d shine.

ya I would really like to see some 30 second exposures but the 3200 iso does look nice.

What in-camera noise and sharpness levels were applied to the JPEG's?

Looks pretty good - this may be a contender for my next body given the performance for price.

So that would be a certain amount of high ISO NR and probably some level of sharpening... The images appear to lack fine detailing to my eyes. But they look clean though. So, in order to give us cleaner files, Canon appears to have sacrificed detail. In any case when shooting in-camera JPEG's.

I like 3200. Better than my 30D for sure. 6400 is good too. Re-sized down and small prints will hide the noise.

To me the 50D looks like a camera worth buying. But I need to be lenses first.
