My buddy wanted to use my tripod & ballhead on a trip we went on, so he bought an arca-type quick release plate (Wimberley) to use on my Arca-Swiss ballhead.

Now he wants a ballhead of his own and wants to keep the plate. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced ballhead (doesn't need to be beefy - will only need to hold an XTi with standard 18-55 or 55-250) with an arca-type quick release? He likes the screw-type quick-release, not the clamp.

I told him about Arca-Swiss, Gitzo, and Really Right Stuff, but he's looking for something less pricey. I did a quick search and it seems most of the less expensive ballheads use their own "system" and not standard arca-type releases...

I think he might be better off trying to sell the Wimberley plate and just buying one of the less expensive ballheads with it's own plate.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

For the "less expensive" heads, check out Benro before someone jumps in and said Benro is crap :)

Alternatively, just fit an Arca style QR to the ballhead he has now.

There's a member here that uses an Arca style QR on a manfrotto head I believe.

i bought a used ATH-A04 from a member here and absolutely love it...paid $60 or $65 for it used...I also bought a tri-pod from amvona but bought it from them off of ebay...so not sure if there is a head there that your friend will like but I will say for the money I am pretty impressed with the quality of their stuff...but I am a relative newb so that shouldnt mean much but when I went into my local shop and had it with me they looked at it and said that it was very nice, especially for the money.

Pretty sure he can just get a Bogen 488 without the quick release clamp on it from say amazon free shipping no tx for around $90 and install that clamp on it with no problems.

That's me - RRS QR on a Manfrotto 488RC2 - works great.
