Ugh. Knocked off chair, camera+flash went flash first into wall and off came the flash. Anyone had similar breaks, and know the costs? Also should I try direct to Canon or I can bring it to a store (I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)? I bought this used from someone on POTN in the States.

Kinda looks like I could just solder the wires, but try to superglue.. but that'd make for one real weak mount..

edit: Err.. sorry for the large images and not resizing, too bummed right now to care :(
and Yeah, this is a Mark II not I as title suggests.

I say buy the replacement from www.Flashzebra.com (external link). It comes with a PC sync port added. It may cost a bit. But that is what I would do.

What is the sub-mini jack used for? Why is it better than the PC jack?

Also is this the same or the original manufacturer PC jack.. seems a bit cheaper:

You can get it unmodified or modified with the sub-mini jack. It is the standard connection method for Pocket Wizards and some other gadgets. He is using Canon parts. Thre part on your link also would seem to fit the bill...

Is fixing this myself hard? I got quoted over the phone for $120 which seems like a big ripoff to me.

It's just a matter of unscrewing the 4 screws at the bottom, unplugging the connector. Plug in new one, screw the new one in?

Actually, I believe the Michael Bass site has instructions for the repair - at least how to take the 580ex - 1 foot off - and that looks to be a couple screws and a connector.

Work slowly and carefully - use the proper tools and you should be OK - if you get cold feet once you're in, just put it back together and send it in to either Michael Bass or Canon. Honestly, it looks simple enough.

I've never worked on 580EX II but I did work on 580EX, and it's pretty easy to replace that hot shoe!! Good luck!

Actual I just bought 550EX from ebay with broken shoe and going to fix it to use as my slave flash. I can post some pics if anyone interested!! Should have it next week!
