Here is one of my very first macro attempts. Evening sunlight gave me a great mix of color and shadow. I didn't notice the spider silk thread until post-processing (tweaks to saturation and contrast, plus sharpening). I'm quite inexperienced with macro, and would appreciate any critique, suggestions or advice regarding this shot or macro in general.

I'm using an old manual Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AI-s lens with a reversing-ring mount for my Canon XTi. I'm finding that the focus ring on the lens is mostly useless--moving in and out gives me better results on bringing the subject into focus. But I'm really appreciating the manual aperture.

It looks pretty good. If I had to change it first I would crop off just a bit more on the bottom. There is a leaf just coming into the frame that is too much in focus.

Then since it is so symetrical vertically I would center the flower in the frame. I know about the rule of thirds but I think it might be just a little bit better that way.

You could try it just a little bit brighter.

THe good thing about digital is that you can try all of the suggestions I've made and then tell me definitively "Nope you're wrong I like it better the original way".

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments. I hadn't even noticed that little sliver of leaf at the bottom--you're right, it needs to go. I'll play with the cropping some when I get a chance and see what works best. I suspect I'll off-center it more to the right if I do anything, but I'll try it centered and see what happens.

I find the bit of spider's web (or whatever it is) to the right distracting.
