I've been lucky with both versions of the lens.

I had the 70-300 IS....a great lens, sharp and a pretty fast focus. I gave it up because it was a little slow on the bird shots. Suckers jump too fast! I loved this lens, sorry I let it go!.

I've heard a lot of people refer to the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS as a "Hidden L" when it comes to IQ (obviously not in build). I would say that the IQ is awesome.

I took this a few hours ago with my 70-300 and a Kenko 1.4 TC. I got the lens off Craigs list in the Spring for a real bargain.

70-300IS with a Kenko 1.4 TC? I asked on here several months ago about this combo and was told "Not possible with this lens." Have you any daylight shots with this setup. Nice pic BTW :D

Can't comment on the 70-300, but I have the 75-300 III and managed to take some half-decent snaps at Wimbledon with it this year:

It's not bad for the money, and the focusing was faster than I'd been led to believe, but it's a little soft and suffers from CA so if you've got the cash I'd go for the 70-300 based on what others are saying.

When I was considering buying a TC I was going to buy the Canon since I have the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS but reconsidered when I was told in the thread for this lens that the Keno will work so I picked one up and sure enough it works and seems to work well.

I thought that I wouldn't have Auto Focus but I do all the way to about 280mm. It is really strange that it stops after that point but this is at low light (shooting the moon).

Unfortunately I am a night crawler (work graveyard shift) so I don't see a whole lot of daylight especially this time of year. I will try and shoot some shots with when I get up later today.
