My old Powershot A80 is having CCD problems as given in this advisory:

http://www.usa.canon.com …tegoryid=221&modelid=8776 (external link)

Canon Rep offered me the following cameras as a replacement. These will be refurbished cameras, and I'll have to pay some money:

1. Canon A570 - $89.00
2. Canon SD1000 - $100.00
3. Canon SX100 - $125.00

So I can either get my A80 fixed or take their offer on these.

The SX100 has a sucky flash recycle, so it's out.

The SD1000 is nice, but you can have a refurbished one on eBay for the same price. Why pay $100 for a camera from Canon when I can buy it on eBay for the same price and still get my A80 fixed, right?

The A570 I don't know much about, and they go for $125 on eBay depending on condition.

Any thoughts? It may not be worth it at all to take up Canon on this offer it seems.

Most camera companies offer a trade-up program. With the cost of new cameras not that high, sometimes it might not be worth it.

The A80 is a good camera. If you are not using it that much, no need in paying for a newer refurbished model when you can have your A80 fixed for free.

Maybe get your A80 fixed and then sell it and use the money to get a used newer model? Best of both worlds. :)

Exactly what I was thinking. While I was writing that first post, I had not done eBay research, so I thought they were offering me a good deal. I went back and researched the used prices on eBay and then realized that the prices they were offering me were not that great.

I like my A80, it was/is a fine performer, and it is a metal body to boot. I think the one my parents have has been dropped a few times and it is still going strong.

I'd have 'em fix my current camera. None of those trade-ups are really much of an incentive, though the A570 is a nice little camera, in my opinion. However, the A590 can be had for $140 straight up, brand spankin' new.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

The sx100 is does have slow flash recycle and frame rate but other than that it rocks. My sis in law has one and she loves it, does nice video as well.

I'd just get the SD1000. I'd imagine Canon will charge you more than $100 to fix your camera...
