Does anyone use the Linksys NAS200 (network attached storage) ?Would you recommend it ?

Are you using the NAS just for storage or / are you using it while editing photos in CS3?

Is there a significant speed drop while accessing files using WiFi (N) laptop compared to wired CPU's ?

Thanks in advance.

I don't use a Linksys NAS but do use a Buffalo NAS. I think it is a great way to go and I do keep archive images there which I edit in Lightroom. The performance over a wire versus WiFi is noticable, with that said I usually edit via WiFi, the speed difference doesn't bother me much.

networking will always be slower than direct connecting a hard drive, but you'll only really feel it when moving a bunch of files around.

One by one, it's not so bad... but it is extremely convenient if you have more than one PC there.

I bought the Linksys NAS500 and returned it a few days later. I ended up with the D-Link DNS-323 and love it.

I did some testing of the Linksys and it was way to SLOW the D-Link is much faster but I am using it on a hard wired GigE Network. I deal with very large files and transfer them around my network.

I also have a home made 6TB Array that I keep all my Audio, Video and Photo files backed up on.

Wireless is not a good idea when transferring large amounts of data.

You need gigabit ethernet to make editing and browsing 15Mb+ photos a pleasant experience. I edit locally and back up to a NAS as I only have about 100Mbps.

I recently bought the ZyXel NSA-220 and a coupleof 750GB drives to load it with. I will be setting it up as RAID1 as I want protection (as much as can be reached) by mirroring.

I will try to post back with my feedback about it but I did buy it based on very good reviews compared to the Netgear et al.

Oh, I only have 100mbps links so hi speed will have to wait on my next PC build :D

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Most of the consumer NAS devices have horrible performance. I would reccomend eSATA, an internal RAID, or RAID on another computer connected with gigabit ethenet.

I built a RAID array on another computer in my network with a 3 750GB drives and the performance over it with gigabit ethernet is great. Performance is practically the same as a directly connect drive. A transfer between my two internal 150GB Raptor drives actually took longer than a transfer to the network storage. I am getting 90-110 Megabytes per second with this setup
