I have found THE tripod I want, Benro A-298n6 (external link). Has so many features I could use but the Benro ball heads are out of my range when combined with these legs. I would like to get the Bogen/Manfrotto 484 RC2 (external link) quick release ball head, would that head work on those legs? Are the heads interchangeable with different brands of legs?

Never purchased a tripod before so please bear with me if it is a stupid question.

What equipment to you want to use on the ball head?

The Manfrotto 484RC2 is a very small ball head and is not suitable for heavier (or longer focal length) lenses.

The Manfrotto 488RC2, on the other hand, is a very popular and very capable ball head for tripod use.

The great majority of interchangeable tripod heads I have seen have a female 3/8-16 thread in them. The tripods they fit on have 3/8-16 studs for the heads to mount on.

I'd still suggest that you go with the Manfrotto 488RC2.

I would love to get the 488RC2 but at the moment the combo I posted is the max I can afford and I will not be ALLOWED to go any more :( Would that set up work for now until I can get a better ball head a year or two down the road?

+1 here also. Using 486RC2 with 40D + Grip + 24-105IS, have no problem with it. Even put on my friend's 70-200 F2.8IS and it still holds fine.

Technically it "should" be able to take up to 6kg :)

I was looking actually for 488RC2 but it is not available any store I went to so I got the 484RC2 as my temporary ball head while waiting for the 488RC2 to be on stock. I have used it with my 40D (gripped) with Tamron 17-50 or EF 70-300 IS. It is okay for this setup but if you can stretch a little bit, the 486RC2 or better the 488RC2 will be very good.

Thats exactly what I wanted to know, thanks lukeap69.

Thank you all for the help. I was able to get the 486rc2, can't wait 'til it all gets here! :)
